MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/06/09)-- Concordia junior forward Sam Johnson (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) was named the MIAC Player of the Week by the league office on Tuesday. Johnson becomes the first Cobber player to earn the award this season. It marks the
second time in her career that she has earned MIAC Player of the Week honors.
Johnson scored a pair of game-winning goals last week to keep the Cobbers one of only six unbeaten or untied teams in all of NCAA Division III.
For the week Johnson had three goals including both game winners in Concordia’s 1-0 win over Bethel on Wednesday and their 4-0 win over St. Mary’s on Saturday. She also had 11 shots in the two games. In the game against Bethel, Johnson scored the only goal of the game in the first half as the Cobbers weren’t able to get a second score on the Royals who entered the game 7-1-1 overall. On Saturday Johnson finally got Concordia on the board in the second half after the two teams played a scoreless first period.
For the season Johnson has a team-leading eight goals and two assists for 18 points. In conference play she had posted five goals and is currently second in the league in goals scored in conference games. She has also been a key ingredient in helping Concordia remain unbeaten and untied on the season as the Cobbers are one of only six unbeaten and untied teams in NCAA Division III women’s soccer. With a record of 10-0-0 on the season, Concordia is currently ranked 14th in the last week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll.
