MOORHEAD, Minn. (09/09/09)-- Concordia reached another milestone on Wednesday when it was placed in the top 25 of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll.
Sparked by a pair of wins in California, the Cobbers entered the charts ranked No.22 in the very first poll of the season. The highest ranking previous to Wednesday was when the Cobbers were placed in the "also receiving votes" category.
Concordia also started the season in the region rankings. The Cobbers are ranked third in the North Region poll. They are one of four MIAC teams ranked in the top 10 of the initial region poll. Macalester is ranked second, while St. Thomas is fifth and St. Ben's is eighth.
The Cobbers traveled out to California last weekend and came away with a pair of quality wins. On Friday, Concordia downed traditional regional power Redlands 2-1. On Saturday they conceded a goal in the opening minutes to Pomona Pitzer but then came back to score three goals and claim a 3-1 win. Pomona Pitzer is coached by former Macalester All-American Jenny Scanlon.
Concordia will put their newly acquired national ranking on the line when they play Principia (Ill.) in the opening game of the Concordia Invitational on Friday, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m.
