1/13/00 Cobbers Jake Estenson , Clayton Horgen , and Mark Hankel named first team  LUTHERAN COLLEGE ALL-AMERICANS

Three Concordia Moorhead football players were named today to the first team of the the 1999 Lutheran Brotherhood Lutheran College All-American Football Team.

Three 1999 Cobber First Team Lutheran College All-Americans:
    Offensive tackle Jake Estenson ('00, Rice Lake, WI) helped the offensive line lead the league in rushing yardage.

    Punter/Kicker Clayton Horgen ('00, Fergus Falls) became Concordia's third leading career scorer with 183 points and career punting leader with a 38 yard average.  He was named the first team punter and was also named the second team kicker.

    Defensive end Mark Hankel ('01, Mapleton, ND) set a school record with 14 sacks and was voted the Cobbers' 1999 team MVP.

Joining the three Cobbers on the first team was fellow MIAC player Jake Kern, a senior defensive back from Augsburg.

Gustavus senior offensive lineman Dan Duncan was named to the second team.

Lutheran colleges from the Division I-AA, II, III, and NAIA levels nominated players for the team. Twenty-four players were named to the first team, another 24 were second team selections. Twenty-three of 41 colleges were represented by either first or second team players.

LUTHERAN BROTHERHOOD NAMES 1999 LUTHERAN COLLEGE ALL-AMERICAN FOOTBALL TEAM

GETTYSBURG, PACIFIC LUTHERAN RUNNING BACKS CO-PLAYERS OF THE YEAR

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.--Division III national champion Pacific Lutheran University led all schools with six players chosen for the 1999 Lutheran Brotherhood Lutheran College All-American Football Team.

Running back Anthony Hicks, offensive lineman Josh Hostetter and linebacker Luke Gearhard were all first team selections. Quarterback Chad Johnson, offensive lineman Andrew Finstuen, and defensive linemen John Eussen all made the second team. Any player participating in football at one of the 41 Lutheran colleges across America was eligible for nomination.

In addition to both being first team selections, standout running backs Paul Smith (Gettysburg College) and Hicks were named co-players of the year. Smith gained 1,546 yards on 237 rushes, good for an average of 6.5 per carry. The Gettysburg senior rushed for 15 touchdowns, and caught three more as part of his 301 yards receiving on the season. Hicks led PLU with 1,202 rushing yards--averaging 7.7 per carry. Also a senior, Hicks ran in 13 touchdowns, and caught three more. Hicks caught 26 passes for 401 yards.

"We are very pleased to honor all of the athletes on this 1999 Lutheran Brotherhood Lutheran College All-American teams," said David Angstadt, chief marketing officer, Lutheran Brotherhood. "While the quality of nominees from different levels of college football made it difficult to decide, this year’s teams are definitely comprised of the very best football players at Lutheran colleges."

Lutheran colleges from the Division I-AA, II, III, and NAIA levels nominated players for the team. Twenty-four players were named to the first team, another 24 were second team selections. Twenty-three of 41 colleges were represented by either first or second team players.

Candidates for the 1999 Lutheran Brotherhood Lutheran College All-American football team were nominated by sports information directors at their institutions. Nominations were then reviewed by a committee that included: three SIDs representing each region of the country, two former sports writers, a former NCAA recruiter, and representatives of Lutheran Brotherhood. All-American team members were chosen based on a wide range of criteria including: personal statistics and honors, team statistics, division of play and personal character.
