This weekend’s series between Concordia and St. Olaf featured two of the MIAC’s premier goaltenders; St. Olaf’s P.T. Haider and Concordia’s Bryan Howard. Both goalies played well enough to give their teams a chance to win in both games. The series was very even and a 1-1 tie Saturday afternoon seemed very fitting. “We played a great game today,” said Haider. “As far as ties go, this one was probably the biggest one I’ve been a part of. It was really important for us to get a point this weekend.”
Concordia’s Mike Gast scored a goal midway through the third period that tied the game at one. Gast led a Concordia rush into the St. Olaf zone and fired a shot that was deflected by an Ole defender past Haider. St. Olaf rallied for a few chances in the final minutes of the third period, but Howard turned away the Oles on every opportunity. However, only a great save by Haider on a Gast breakaway with thirty seconds left sent the game into overtime. “P.T. played a solid game for us tonight,” said head coach Sean Goldsworthy. “His save in the third period was probably his biggest save, ever.” Neither team was able to get a quality scoring attempt in the overtime as both teams played with caution.
The Oles started off the scoring when a Jeff Simison pass sparked a breakaway for Craig Newman. Newman went straight to the net with a defender on his back and put a shot over the blocker of Howard, giving the Oles a 1-0 lead.
The Oles’ played right alongside the Cobbers in both games. St. Olaf’s top line of Jake Johnston, Tim Legrid, and Jeff Simison proved themselves as one the top lines in the MIAC. “Jake, Tim, and Jeff really had a great weekend,” said Goldsworthy. “ They played outstanding and are definitely one of the top lines in the conference.”
St. Olaf sits at 2-3-1 in the MIAC and 4-4-1 overall. The Cobbers now
stand at 5-0-1, 5-1-2 overall, and sit atop the MIAC with 11 points. “I
think we proved so far that we are one of the top four teams in the MIAC,”
said Goldsworthy. “We can play and beat anyone. However, we’re a young
team and we to become more consistent.” The Oles travel to Duluth, Minn.
for a 7 p.m. tilt with St. Scholastica on Friday, Dec. 10 and to Superior,
Wis., for a 3 p.m. game with UW-Superior on Saturday, Dec. 11.
