The goaltending of Marc Kielkucki and a four-goal second period lifted Air Force to a 4-0 victory over Concordia in a non-conference college hockey game Saturday at the Cadet Ice Arena. The victory earned the Falcons a sweep over the Cobbers, AFA's fifth sweep of the season.
Air Force improved to 15-15-2 overall, equaling the best record after 30 games in 10 seasons. The Falcons also have a chance to post the first winning season since 1989-90. Air Force has four regular-season games left on the schedule.
Kielkucki kept the Falcons alive in the first period as he made 11 saves, several of which could have easily given the Cobbers an early lead. Concordia, 17-6-2 and ranked eighth in the nation in Division III, out-shot the Falcons, 11-10, in the opening period and had more scoring opportunities than the home team. However, Kielkucki was sharp between the pipes after missing last night's game with a bruised knee.
The Falcon offense came alive with a vengeance in the second period. The Falcons out-shot the Cobbers, 17-6, and found the back of the net four times. With crisp passes and creative plays, Air Force took control of the game. Nels Grafstrom got the Falcons on the board first with a goal at 4:16. Scott Bradley raced down the right side of the ice and beat a Cobber defenseman with a nifty jump move. His pass was then right of the tape of Grafstrom's stick whose wrister beat CC goalie Shawn Moore top shelf. Air Force kept up the pressure and the result was the second goal at 9:47. Brian Gornick took the puck around the back of the net and sent a pass to Brian Rodgers in the slot who scored his 11th goal of the season. Just two minutes later, the Falcons struck again. Defenseman Jace Anders sent a shot from the point that found its way through traffic for a 3-0 advantage. His fifth goal of the season was assisted by Kirk Zerkel and Kyle Fransdal. Derek Olson added the fourth goal for the Falcons at 16:58 on a breakaway. His third goal of the series and 13th of the season was assisted by Grafstrom and Anders.
Kielkucki was again solid in the third period, making seven saves and securing his school-record seventh career shutout. He made 23 saves on the night for his second shutout of the season.
Air Force is now off until it travels to Denver to play the Pioneers,
Friday at 7 p.m. at the Magness Arena. The Falcons host their final home
game of the season Saturday, Feb. 26, against Bemidji State at the Cadet
Ice Arena.
