Welcome to the 2000 St. Thomas Invite. St. Thomas, welcomes fellow MIAC
school Concordia-Moorhead and Iowa Conference schools Buena Vista and
Luther.
Concordia is 4-6 after its spring trip to Florida last week. The Cobbers
were led by three sophomores -- Jill Pontius (.407), Erin Gunderson
(.375,
3-2 2.65 ERA) and Kathy Braun (.364). Last season, Concordia
went 21-14
overall and 15-6 in the MIAC for third place. Gunderson was All-MIAC
as a
pitcher and tied for second in MIAC batting (.444).
Buena Vista was 20-19 last season and took third in the conference behind
NCAA champion Simpson and region qualifier Central. BVU is a perrenial
national power and reached the West Region finals in 1998.
Luther was 22-9 last season, fifth in the Iowa Conference. Coach Betty
Hoff
has 497 career wins --- second most among active Division III coaches.
Senior OF Holly Wendt (.404, 38 hits) leads the returners.
St. Thomas, 32-14 last season, won its final 15 MIAC games in 1999 to
finish
second at 20-2, one game out of first. The Toms received their third
consecutive NCAA berth and took second to Chapman in the NCAA West
Region
finals. Wendy Miller, whose team is ranked 24th in the preseason Division
III poll, makes her head coaching debut for St. Thomas with several
top
returners -- juniors Casey Curson (18-7-4, 1.36) and Avery
Heidenreich
(.242, 32 hits, 22 RBI); seniors Jessica Matthees, Steph Vibar
and Ann
Cheesebrough (.405 in MIAC); sophs Heather Martin (.347, 50 hits) and
Becky
Hilgert (.268, 37 hits), Another standout, junior Sarah Grudnowski
(.436,
58 hits), isn't with UST for the tournament -- she's the starting point
guard for the Tommies' 25-1
basketball team playing in the NCAA round of 16 this weekend in Abilene,
Tex.
