Season Outlook and Notes: (see also an updated preview 9/3/99)
8/10/99
The Cobbers are looking to rebound from a 4-6 season in 1998,  4-5 in the MIAC. It was just the second losing season for the Cobbers since 1985.

Concordia returns two All-MIAC performers from last year's team, senior offensive lineman Jake Estenson and senior kicker/punter, Clayton Horgen.

Horgen led the MIAC last year with a 40.65 average on 54 punts . Coach Jim Christpherson, entering his 31st season with a 208-91-7 record,  is hoping Horgen won't have to punt as often in 1999.

Cobber captains for 1999 are Estenson and linebacker Nels Paulson .

Concordia expects to have ten players with experience as starters back on defense and seven back on offense.

A Closer Look:

The Defense:

The Cobbers' spent most of 1998 gaining experience with a young crew that gave up 26 points a game.  The 1999 defense, with at least ten players having starting experience, will be expected to make significant improvement on that number.

Defensive line:

Defensive ends Mark Hankel (Jr. 6-3 230 Mapleton ND, Oak Grove) and Travis Boyd (Sr. 6-2  235 Lake Isabella, CA,  Kern Valley H.S.) and tackle Jeff Westrum (Jr. 6-2 250 Clearbrook. MN, Clearbrook-Gonvick H.S.) form a strong nucleus up front. Boyd was second on  the team in tackles with 45 last year from a middle linebacker spot. His move to the line should improve the  pressure up front. Hankel led the team in sacks with 9.5 and Westrum was third with 6.

Linebackers:

Concordia has four linebackers with starting experience for the three linebacker spots. Joel Vettleson (Jr. 6-0 210 Richmond MN Rocori - Cold Spring) came on stong at middle linebacker late in 1998, making Boyd's move to defensive end less worrisome. Mike Schwab (Jr. 6-4 200 Billings MT Skyview) had 34 tackles at his outside spot last year and is expected to start on the weak side.  Two seniors, Jordon Nesvig (Sr. 6-0 205 Fargo ND South) and Nels Paulson (Sr. 6-3 200 Cambridge MN Cambridge) are likely to battle for the other starting outside spot. Both saw extensive action there last year.

Corner backs and Safeties:

Last year's leading tackler Eric Stenehjem (FS Sr. 5-11 170 Williston, ND, Williston) graduated. But good experience returns in starting cornerbacks Dan Tollefson (Jr. 5-9 170 Madison MN, Lac Qui Parle Valley) and Eric Wold (Jr. 5-11 180 Fargo, ND, South) and safety Travis Olson (So. 6-0 185 Hawley, MN, Hawley). Olson was voted last year's Cobber Freshman of the Year.

The Cobber offense:

Running backs:

Len Crouse (Jr. 6-3 205 Hazen, ND) returns for his third year as the starting fullback. He led the '98 Cobbers with 611 rushing yards and 4.3 per carry.  Jason Braaten (Jr. 5-10, 180, Dent, MN, Perham HS) was making a case for more playing time at halfback late last year with some impressive running.  More playing time seems likely after last year's sophomore starter, Marcus Ludtke , transfered to St. Thomas over the summer. Coach Christopherson is also hoping he might get some added spark in the backfield from Joel Ferrie (HB, Jr., 5-9, 180), a transfer from SDSU. Several others are expected to add depth to the backfield. See the full list of running back candidates.

Quarterbacks:

The Cobbers graduated career passing leader (4,889 yds) and three year starter Ethan Pole (6-2 200 Moorhead MN, Moorhead).

Heading into fall practice a battle for the starting spot seems to be brewing between two juniors, last year's backup Rob Szymanski (6-0, 190, Great Falls MT) and Jeff Hertel (6-2, 185, Fargo, South HS).  Hertel entered 1998 as Pole's heir apparent but then missed the entire season after undergoing surgery to correct a vascular anomoly that caused vision impairment.  Some see Szymanski as the better runner in the option and Hertel as the better pure passer. But given their lack of game experience even that's hard to know for sure. See list of all quarterback candidates.

Offensive line:

All-MIAC captain Jake Estenson (OT Sr. 6-5 265 Rice Lake, WI) will team with fellow returning starters Mark Haugen (OT So. 6-2 280 Moorhead MN) and Joel Nelson (OG Jr. 6-1 250 Fargo ND South) on what should be an improved offensive line. The big loss to graduation was 1998 Cobber MVP Bob Zacher (6-3 250 Alexandria, MN, Jefferson) at center.

See a list of all offensive linemen.

Receivers:

Adam Strainer (WR Jr. 6-3 180 Helena MT Helena High) led the Cobbers last year with 35 catches for 665 yards in 1998.  Two year starting tight end Mike Rydell (Sr. 6-4 230 Bismarck, ND Century) had 13 catches for 147 yards but is nursing a back injury. Len Crouse is the only other returning Cobber to catch a pass last year, and he caught just 8 for 44 yards.

Strainer is going to be looking at a lot of double teams until some newcomers can prove they are a threat. See a list of all receivers.
