Season Outlook and Notes:

The Scots showed a good deal of improvement last fall under their new head coach Dennis Czech, who opened up the Macalester passing game for the first time in over a decade.  Continued progress is expected, but the Scots will have a tall challenge replacing the best and biggest senior class Macalester has produced in years.  Gone are more than half of the teamUs starters, including All MIAC tight end Jon Goodrich and All-MIAC defensive end Ben Hampstead, who registered 18 tackles for loss of yardage and nine QB sacks.  The Scots must replace most of their offensive and defensive lines.

Offensive coordinator Tom Cross opened up the passing game last season and the Scots look to improve their aerial attack under junior quarterback Aaron Quitmeyer (Jr., Willston, ND/Williston), who threw for 1,674 yards and eight scores.  Sophomore wide receivers Ty OUConnell (Helena, MT/Capital) and Matt Diediker (Hinton, IA) will be key targets again, while Grant Heuett (So., Pueblo, CO/Pueblo) is a threat out of the backfield.  Macalester passed on nearly two-thirds of its offensive plays in T98 - a drastic change from earlier years.

The Scots must replace five four-year regulars on the defensive side of the ball, including standouts Ben Hampstead (DE) and Eddie Ray (MLB), two of the MIACUs top players.  Tackle Steve Kelm (Sr., Brownton, MN/Brownton) is a good run-stopper, while Nate Eitzmann (Jr., Hardy, NE) and Karl
Wassman (Jr,. Ormsby, MN) return to the defensive backfield.
