Coach Kathy Wall's fourth season at Concordia resulted in a 16-9 record, 15-7 in the MIAC, good for 5th place in the league. That no-senior '98-99 outfit was quietly gearing for a run at the MIAC title this year. With four starters back that run is still possible.  But the odds of succeeding got worse with the loss of some key inside people.

The team will be led by All-MIAC juniors Brandi Myers (G, 5-8 Glyndon, DGF HS, 16.1 ppg) and Sara Spears (F, Jr. 5-10 Spicer, New London-Spicer HS, 12.1 ppg, 7.5 ppg). Sharp shooting point guard Nikki Vetter (Sr., 5-5, West Fargo, ND, 6.5 ppg, 3.8 apg, 3.0 rpg) also returns, as does starting forward Sarah Jacobson (Jr., 5-10, Fargo, ND, Shanley HS, 6.2 ppg, 4.1 rpg).

Wall also has four players back who made major contributions off the bench last year. Senior guard Sara Kragerud (5-7, Hawley, 3.9 ppg) has started at various times in her career. Guards Mandy Berggren (So., 5-8, Cokato, Dassel-Cokato HS, 5.2 ppg) and Steph Losch (Jr., 5-9, Hallock, Kittson Central HS, 1.4 ppg) both return as solid players on the perimeter. And Hilary Schutt (F/C, So., 5-9, Milnor, ND, 4.7 ppg) is back to help out inside.

A wrench was thrown into coach Wall's plan for a dominating inside game when Jaime Olson, last year's top Cobber freshman, did not return. Olson (Randall, MN, Little Falls HS) averaged 11.1 ppg and 7.0 rpg and was named to last year's All-MIAC First Year Team. And Erica Visto (Oakes, ND, 4.4 ppg, 3.8 rpg)), Olson's strong, 5-10 backup, also did not return.  Same for Rebecca Karli (F, 5-10, Faribault, 6.1 ppg, 2.7 rpg)

Now Spears, who was clearly going to be one of the MIAC's premier power forwards this year, will likely be playing against a lot of true posts.  And the Cobbers will have to pick up the pace in the full court.

The Cobbers have the speed and scoring ability to contend with the best teams in the league. If they can rebound and defend inside with them as well they'll be headed for a high finish.
