MIAC Women's Hockey Player of
the Week
March 7, 2000
Carrie Stefaniak, Gustavus, SR, Defense, Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley HS
Stefaniak scored three goals in two games to help Gustavus advance to
the MIAC Women's Hockey Playoff Championship with a 3-2 win and a 1-1 tie
against St. Mary's in Winona last weekend. Stefaniak scored two of
the Gusties three goals in the 3-2 win on Friday night and then scored
the tying goal with 1:22 remaining in regulation on Saturday afternoon.
Stefaniak's goal on Saturday allowed the Gusties to earn a tie with the
Cardinals and avoid having to play a mini-game to decide which team would
advance in the playoffs. Stefaniak also became the program's all-time
leading goal scorer with the goal pushing her career total to 49 in just
two seasons. This season, Stefaniak leads Gustavus in scoring with
31 goals and 21 assists for 52 points. The Gusties, who are currently
18-8-1 overall, will face Augsburg in Minneapolis this Friday and Saturday
for the MIAC Playoff title with the winner earning a berth to the Division
III Championship series in Boston, Mass., on March 24-25.

MIAC Women's Hockey Player of
the Week

Sarah Garrison, Augsburg forward (So., West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley HS)
Garrison had a seven-point (five goals, two assists) weekend as Augsburg
clinched a share of its second-straight MIAC championship, and home-ice
advantage throughout the MIAC playoffs, with a sweep of St. Catherine Wednesday
and Saturday. Garrison scored two goals and added an assist, including
an unassisted power-play goal, in Augsburg's 9-4 win at St. Catherine on
Wednesday, then added a three-goal hat trick and an assist in the Auggies'
11-1 home win over the Wildcats on Saturday. Last year's MIAC Player of
the Year at Gustavus, Garrison transferred to Augsburg at the semester
break. In her 15 games as an Auggie, Garrison has 15 goals and 12 assists
for 27 points -- second on the team in goals and total points, third in
assists.

Meg Schmidt, Augsburg goalie (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) --
Schmidt claimed a win and tie as Augsburg scored an important three
points of four in a series with St. Mary's this weekend. Schmidt stopped
25-of-28 shots in goal in Saturday's 4-3 win at Augsburg, then made faced
37 shots, saving 36, as the Auggies claimed a 1-1 tie at St. Mary's on
Sunday. The draw gave Augsburg important tiebreaker advantage over St.
Mary's, should the two teams tie for the conference title. Schmidt, a Division
III second-team All-American last season, has a 2.54 overall goals-against-average
(2.05 in MIAC play) and .908 save percentage (.918 in MIAC play).

MIAC Women's Hockey Co-Players
of the Week
Feb. 15, 2000
St. Catherine's Mahrya Honer and Augsburg's
Angie Rieger were named
Co-Players of the Week in MIAC women's hockey.
St. Catherine's Honer, a sophomore forward from Roseville, had a six-goal game and finished the series with eight goals and three assists as the Wildcats swept Bethel 9-2 and 8-0. Honer scored two goals and added three assists in Wednesday's 9-2 win at home and then scored six goals, finding the back of the net five consecutive to lead the Cats in a 8-0 victory on Saturday. The Wildcats, in just their second season of varsity hockey, improved to 13-6-1 overall and 3-6-1 in the MIAC. Honer currently leads the MIAC in scoring with 15 goals and also has seven assists for 22 points
Augsburg's Rieger, a junior from
Courtland and New Ulm High, had two consecutive hat tricks and a nine-point
weekend as Augsburg swept St. Thomas to remain in the hunt for the MIAC
championship. In Friday night's 7-6 home win over the Tommies, Rieger set
two school records, scoring three goals for her team-record second hat
trick of the year (and third of her career), while adding two assists to
tie a school single-game record with a five-point effort. In Saturday's
7-0 win at Parade Ice Arena, Rieger scored three goals and assisted on
another goal to help Augsburg move within a game of St. Mary's in the chase
for the conference regular-season crown. Rieger, a two-time All-American,
leads the Auggies with 36 points (21 goals, 15 assists), tops on the team
in both goals and assists.

MIAC Women's Hockey Player of
the Week

Erika Buck, St. Thomas, JR, Wing, Burnsville
Buck had three goals and two assists in a weekend series with Concordia
helping the Toms post a win and a tie. She had a goal and assist in Friday's
3-3 tie and had two goals and an assist in Saturday's 4-1 win. her first
goal broke a 1-1 tie and her second goal iced the win. She has 28 points
and is second on the team in scoring. The Toms, 10-5-1 overall, are 5-1-1
in their last seven games and are tied for fourth in the conference at
4-3-1 in just their second season of varsity hockey.

MIAC Women's Hockey Player of

Christy Hicks, St. Mary's University, (Fr., Forward, Bloomington, Minn.)
Hicks scored six goals and added an assist for seven points in three Cardinals wins last week as they improved to 8-0 in the MIAC with a win over Bethel last Wednesday and two wins over Concordia over the weekend.
Hicks scored a hat trick in SMU's 8-0 win over Bethel last Wednesday, then added three goals and an assist as SMU swept the Cobbers 4-0 and 9-0. For the season, Hicks has 12 goals and 11 assists for 23 points.

MIAC Women's Hockey Player of

Meg Schmidt, Augsburg goalie (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS)
Schmidt made 55 saves and allowed just one goal in a weekend sweep of
St. Benedict, 3-1 on Friday and 1-0 on Saturday. Schmidt made 28 saves
in Friday's win and stopped all 27shots she faced to earn the shutout on
Saturday, her third shutout of the season to set a new single-season school
record. Schmidt is 6-3 on the season with a .921 save percentage and 2.28
goals-against average. In conference play, Schmidt is 4-0 with a .967 save
percentage and 0.75 GAA. Schmidt has been Augsburg's No. 1 goalie the past
four years and earned AWCHA Division III second-team All-America honors
last year.

Gustavus senior forward Carrie Stefaniak scored four goals and added two assists in two games as the Gusties picked up a weekend sweep over the College of St. Catherine by the scores of 7-1 and 6-5. Stefaniak scored three goals and added one assist in Friday's 7-1 win in St. Paul and then contributed one goal and one assist in Saturday's 6-5 win in St. Peter. The Gusties improved to 8-5 overall and 2-2 in the MIAC. Stefaniak leads the team in scoring with 19 goals and 10 assists for 29 points.

Concordia's Sandra
Johansson (So. Forward, Jonstorp Sweden) had four goals
and two assists in the Cobbers' weekend sweep of UW Eau Claire. She had
one assist in Saturday's 4-3 win and then had four goals and an assist
in Sunday's 5-1 victory. Johansson leads the 7-3 Cobbers in scoring this
season with 16 goals and seven assists.

Offensive Player of the Week
St. Benedict junior forward Paula Vogt, a native of Richmond and a graduate of Rocori High, had all seven goals in the Blazers 5-0 win Dec. 1 and 2-2 tie with St. Catherine Dec. 4 in conference play. Vogt has a team-best 13 points, including 11 goals, in eight games for the St. Ben’s (4-3-1 overall, 1-0-1 MIAC).
Defensive Player of the Week
St. Mary’s freshman goalie Missie Meemken,
a St. Cloud native, was in goal for both of the Cardinals’ close wins over
Gustavus last weekend. The freshman stopped 28 shots in Saturday's 2-1
home victory, then came back with a 34-save effort as Saint Mary's completed
the sweep of Gustavus with a 2-1 win in St. Peter on Sunday. For the weekend,
Meemnken stopped 62 of 64 shots and boasted a .969 save percentage. The
Cardinals, who improved to 6-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the MIAC, tied Gustavus
and Augsburg for the 1998-99 MIAC championship.

St. Mary's goalie Missie Meemken
(Fr., Goalie, St. Cloud, Minn.) was in goal for both Saint Mary's games
vs. Findlay University, an NCAA Division I school. Meemken stopped 42 shots
in the Cardinals' 4-2 loss on Friday night, then kicked out 42 more on
Saturday as SMU battled the Oilers to a 2-2 tie. For the weekend, Meemken
finished with 84 saves and a .933 save percentage, allowing just six goals
and posting a 2.88 goals-against-average.

MIAC Women's Hockey Player of
the Week

Augsburg forward April Leger (So.,
Austin, Minn.) notched a natural hat trick (three goals ina row) in a five-minute
span of the second period on Friday night, leading Augsburg to an 8-2 win
over Wisconsin-Superior in the first game of a two-game sweep at Augsburg
Ice Arena. The next afternoon, Leger added her fourth goal of the series,
on a shorthanded goal at the 15:01 mark of the second period. Leger's first
goal Friday was on the power play and her third was a shorthanded tally.
She added an assist for a four-point night on Friday. After two games this
year, Leger already has as many points (five) as she had all last season.

1999-2000 MIAC Women's Hockey
Player of the Week

St. Mary's Missy
Westergren (So., F, Lonsdale, Minn./Montgomery Lonsdale
HS) scored three goals - all three in the second game of the Cardinals'
sweep of UW-Superior last weekend -- and added three assists for six points
as Saint Mary's opened its season with 2-0 and 8-3 nonconference victories
over UW-Superior last weekend. An All-MIAC selection a year ago, Westergren
led the 98-99 team in goals (28) and points (46) as St. Mary's finished
16-7-2 in its first year as a varsity program.
