Women's basketball makes fast break

The Concordia women’s basketball team started the 2000-2001 season with a bang, with four conference wins in its first four games. Their win streak was interrupted with a Saturday loss at Carleton, but the Cobbers continued their season opening surge by pummeling Gustavus in more MIAC action on Monday.
“Getting off to a great start made us want to work even harder,” stated sophomore forward Katrina Wilberts. “We set a goal at the beginning of the season to win the conference, and that is still our goal.”
Poor shooting is blamed for the Cobber’s recent loss to Carlton as Concordia shot a disappointing 16-58 from the field. The Cobbers opened the game well, keeping up with the Knights to lead at the half, 30-29.  In the second half the Knights went on a 15-4 run that turned the game sour for the Cobbers. The Cobbers were outscored in the second half, 42-28, and when the buzzer sounded it was Carleton who had the win, by a score of 71-58. “It was a good time to have a loss rather than later in the season,” Wilberts said. “We know where we stand in the conference and what we
need to work on.”
 
Monday night saw the Cobbers win decisively over the Gusties, 73-49. Concordia opened strong, outscoring Gustavus 29-20 in the first half. In the second half the Cobbers really put on the pressure and blasted the Gusties, 44-29. The Cobbers featured three players in double digits, with senior guard
Brandi Myers scoring 20 for Concordia, senior forward Sara Spears scoring 17, and junior guard Mandy Berggren adding another 10.  “We were determined to get back on our winning streak at the beginning of the game,” said Wilberts. “I think everyone really stepped up and got the job done.”

The Cobbers were downed at home, however, by St. Thomas on Wednesday, 68-54. They next look forward to playing at Macalester tomorrow. The Cobbers have a 5-2 record in MIAC play and are 7-3 overall.

Skaters cruise, records fall

The men’s and women’s hockey teams returned from Christmas break to win three out of four games, score a combined 34 goals, record two season records, tie one season record and earn one school record. 

The women’s team defeated Hamline in two games last weekend, 9-1 and 14-1. In the first game, the Cobbers scored five of their nine goals in the third period. Junior Anna Grafstrom scored three goals while sophomore Annie Knierim and junior Sandra Johansson each added two. The Cobbers blasted Hamline in the second game, scoring a season-high 14 goals, a tie for the school record of most goals scored in a game. Sophomore Katie Jacques scored four goals, one which set a school record for the fastest goal scored at eight seconds into the game. Johansson added four goals and three assists.
“Our team needed a couple wins under our belt to gain confidence,” sophomore Shyla Wilson said.
The wins improve the Cobbers conference record to 4-6 and 6-6 overall. They are currently fifth place in the MIAC, a place that Wilson says they are happy with right now. “We still want to finish in the top four,” she said. “We have to win pretty much every game, but we think we can do it.”
The Cobbers play home tonight at 7 and tomorrow at 2 p.m. against St. Olaf. Wilson said they will be switching up the lines, and playing a few new players. “This is the first time we will have a strong offense and a strong defense,” she said.
After spending nearly three weeks off the ice, the men’s team split games against two different NCHA opponents last weekend, beating St. Scholastica and losing to UW-Superior. The 9-0 win against St. Scholastica featured a season-high number of goals, and marked the tenth career shutout of senior goalie Bryan Howard’s career. Senior Mark Schiller scored three goals and had two assists for the Cobbers while Howard made 21 saves. “We scored early and we scored often,” head coach Steve Baumgartner said.
The Cobbers also dropped a game to UW-Superior, 4-2. Senior Jon Tranby and freshman Andy Vix scored the two goals for the Cobbers. The Cobbers have only four losses on the season, with all of them to Wisconsin teams. Head coach Steve Baumgartner said that his team has still pulled out positives from these losses. “The Wisconsin league is one of the best leagues in the country,” he
said. “These games help us find out how we measure up.” 

The split brings Concordia’s record to 5-0-1 in the conference and 6-4-2 overall. The Cobbers still remain at the top conference, and travel to MIAC opponent St. Thomas this weekend. Baumgartner said St. Thomas is tough, and is much better than their 2-2-2 conference record shows.
“I think they’re still the team to beat in the conference,” he said.

Women’s and men’s track and field look to continue last year’s indoor success

Tomorrow, the men’s and women’s indoor track teams will begin the 2001season. In 2000, both teams finished second in the MIAC, and as the new season kicks off, both have aspirations of repeating last years’ success.

The goal of the men’s team is to finish in the three in the MIAC, said men’s head coach Garrick Larson. The women’s goal, according to head track coach Marv Roeske, is to go all the way and win the conference championship.
The Cobber men will be led by senior captains Adam Strainer, Chris Goebel, Brett Ramstad and Andrew Fritz. Larson says that the team has the talent to be highly competitive. Strainer was the winner of the 2000 MIAC men’s pentathlon, and an All-American in the decathlon. Goebel was a national qualifier in the 1500-meter run. Ramstad placed seventh in the MIAC in the 800-meter run,
and Fritz was a provisional national qualifier in the high jump. Alongside the captains are many other talented athletes to help the team in the achievement of its goals. Senior Joel Nelson placed second in the shot put and hammer events at the 2000 MIACs, and junior Joe Schmidgall was a national qualifier in the high jump.
The Cobbers have “good balance in all events,” said Larson. “The jumping events have been one of our strengths in the past. This season we may be stronger in the middle and long distance events.”
The women’s team also has enough talent to go around. “We are a very large squad in numbers,” said Roeske. “[We’re] very deep and able to cover all the events in track and field better than any
other team in the MIAC.”
The women’s team, like the men’s team, also boasts a good blend of veteran leadership and talented newcomers. Seniors Sara Grineski, Margaret Cropp, and Angie Strom captain the women’s team. Grineski is the 2000 MIAC champion and record holder in the 100-meter hurdles. “Strom and Cropp are outstanding multi-event athletes (heptathlon and pentathlon) and can score in a lot of events,” added Roeske. 

The women’s team will also be tough in throwing, middle and long distance events, said Roeske. The middle and long distance running events will feature many of the same women that made up the 2000 NCAA national qualifying cross country team, said Roeske. NCAA national discus qualifier Mariah Mougey anchors the group of athletes in the throwing events. The women’s roster also has two of the best pole-vaulters in the MIAC in seniors Jen Fettig and Lisa Hodap. Each owns a school record in the pole-vault.
The 2001 track and field indoor season opens tomorrow with the Alumni Meet,followed next Saturday by the Cobber Open. Both events will be held in the Olson Forum.

Swimmers train in Hawaii

The cold Minnesota winter did not keep the Concordia swim team from having a productive break.
Eleven swim team members, along with two divers, traveled to Hawaii for a training trip from December 26-January 2. “It was definitely beneficial,” said senior Lacy Wallace. “I feel so
much stronger.”
The team stayed on the University of Hawaii campus and had two hour practices twice a day.
“It is so easy to go for break and think that you will train, but it was so nice to train with the team,” Wallace said.
The trip, which is taken every other year, also serves as a recruiting tool. “It is good for students to know that they have the opportunity to travel,” commented head coach Julie Lucier.
The team, which focused intently on technique over yardage this year, is gearing up for its last three meets of the season, including the Conference Championships. “We’re trying something totally new [with technique],” Lucier said. “In general, it’s a whole new philosophy. We are treating our swimming strokes more like golf or tennis strokes versus looking at them as an aerobic activity.”
The team has placed 6th at conference the last three years, and hopes to improve this time around.
“It’s time to go up [in rank],” Wallace said. “If we swim well, we can be competitive.”
This weekend the Cobbers compete at the St. John’s Invitational.
