9/23 Concordia Grinds Out Win Over Macalester 24-14.
Concordia used the blue print from last week's loss to grind out their first victory of the season, a 24-14 victory over Macalester. Last week St.Thomas rushed for 360 yards en route to beating the Cobbers, this
week Concordia turned  the tables and rushed for 283 yards against the Scots. Len Crouse (Sr., Hazen ND, Hazen H.S.) was the workhorse, rushing for 144 yards on 37 carries and 2 TD's. Concordia's defense held Macalester to 249 yards of total offense and only 49 yards in rushing. Mark Hankel (Mapleton ND Fargo Oak Grove H.S.) added to his school record of sacks adding two more on the day.

Macalester broke out early when Aaron Quitmeyer hooked up with Ty O'Connell for a 39 yard touchdown strike with 11:53 left to go in the first quarter. After that the Concordia ground game took control. From the ensuing kickoff the Cobbers went on a 19 play 73 yard scoring drive that ended in Len Crouse's 2 yard touchdown run, his first of two on the day. Mike Scwab then intercepted a Quitmeyer pass and returned it 20 yards to the Macalester 22. The Cobbers struck quickly using only two plays to find the Scots endzone. Crouse scored again as he rambled 16 yards for his second touchdown.

Concordia ended the half with an Eric Wold field goal, and the score at intermission was 17-7.

The Scots would get close in the third quarter as the teams traded turnovers and penalties, each team turned the ball over five times in the game. Macalester closed to within three when Grant Huett scored on
a 14 yard run with 2:35 left in the third quarter.

Concordia put the game away on their first possesion of the fourth quarter as they took the ball 85 yards in four minutes culminating in quarterback Jeff Hertel's lone touchdown pass of the day, a 20 yard
shovel pass to Joel Ferrie.

For the game Hertel, the leading passer in the MIAC heading into today's game, threw for only 92 yards while his counterpart Quitmeyer threw for 200 yards on 11 completions.

Concordia notches their first win of the year and goes to 1-2 overall, and 1-1 in the MIAC. Macalester slides to 1-3 on the year and 0-2 in the league.

Next week the Cobbers travel to Gustavus to take on a tough Gustie team that has suffered two losses this year by a combined total of eight points. Macalester plays host to Carleton in a game where both teams will be looking for their first conference win of the season.
