Junior catcher Jill Pontius (Eagle Bend, Minn.) throws out a St. Mary's batter at first base after a successful sacrifice.

4/28 Concordia Drops Home Doubleheader to St. Mary's 8-0, 9-1.
Series Summary
Concordia dropped a pair of games to defending national champion St. Mary's 8-0 and 9-1. The Cobbers fought an uphill battle in both games as the Cardinals jumped in front in the first game behind a four-run third inning, and hammered out three runs in three different innings in the second game.

With a strong wind blowing in from right field Concordia was unable to score on St. Mary's pitcher Jennifer Gonerka. The Cobbers best chance was in the first inning when lead off hitter Kathy Braun (Jr., Willmar, Minn.) singled and was sacrificed to second by Danielle Englehorn (Fr., Windom, Minn.). Catcher Jill Pontius (Jr., Eagle Bend, MN) singled Braun to third, and then both runners were stranded. Senior pitcher Christine Moen (Sr., Glenwood, Minn.) was able to retire the Cardinals in the first two innings but then gave up four runs in the decisive third inning. After scratching across four more runs in the next three innings, St. Mary's held on in the bottom of the sixth to gain the victory in game one.

In the second game Concordia proved to be their own worst enemy, as they committed a season-high seven errors. Concordia used third baseman Amanda Schindeldecker (Jr., Menahga, Minn.) as a late-decision starter, and she went the distance - giving up nine runs, but only two were earned. The Cobbers could only put two hits on the board against all-conference pitcher Jill Hocking. Both hits were from the bat of Kathy Braun who finished the game 2-for-2 with a walk and the only run scored on the day for Concordia.

In the first game of the series Schindeldecker had her 16-game consecutive on-base streak snapped. Until the opener she had reached base in every one of the Cobbers' games this season.

With the two losses Concordia drops to 7-7 in the MIAC and 10-8 overall. St. Mary's continues their chase towards a conference title as they improve to 17-1 in league play and 27-5 overall. The Cobbers will play St. kate's on Monday at a neutral site, then wind up the season with St. Thomas, St. Ben's and St. Olaf.
