12/16 Concordia Holds Off Hamline 65-54.
Jeff Ubben scores two of his game 18 points in the Cobbers 65-54 victory over Hamline.

Concordia came out of the blocks sprinting and built a big enough lead to hold off a gritty Hamline team 65-54. The Cobbers opened the game on a 17-2 run and let that spurt carry them through the rest of the game. Hamline gradually chipped away at the lead and cut it to four at 46-42 midway through the second half. After that, the teams traded baskets and the Cobbers were finally able to cement the game at the free throw line. For the game Concordia shot 42 free throws, making 24 (57.1%). Both teams were cold from the floor in the first half. Concordia went 0-for-6  from beyond the 3-point arc in the first half while Hamline was 0-for-8.

Jeff Ubben (Jr., Moorhead, MN) regained his scoring touch from the inside, leading all scorers with 18 points, 13 in the second half. He also grabbed 11 rebounds to complete the double-double which is his first of the season. First year player Kevin Gilchrest (Seattle, WA) added 12 points, 10 of which came from the free throw line. Gilchrest was able to break down the Piper defense on the dribble and pass off to his teammates for open looks at the basket. Joe Snowden (Sr., St. Paul, MN) was the third member of the double-digit trio for Concordia as he chipped in 14. John Simonsen and Chris Bloomquist were the only Hamline players to score more than eight points. Simonsen scored 13 and Bloomquist had 11.

Concordia improves to 2-1 in the league and is currently in a tie for third place going into the Christmas Break. Overall the Cobbers are 5-2 on the season. They have not been three games over the .500 mark since the end of the 1996-97 season. Hamline reamains winless on the year as they fall to 0-3 in the MIAC and 0-7 overall. The Cobbers have three weeks off before their next game when they travel to Northfield to play Carleton on January 6th at 7:30.

Game Day Preview
The Headline: One Final Exam

The Preview:
Concordia (1-1 in the MIAC,  4-2 Overall)
Concordia is hoping to end the first semester on a positive note. After dropping their MIAC opener to Augsburg the Cobbers fought back and downed St. Olaf 60-54 last Saturday. The victory keeps Concordia in the top half of the MIAC and gives them a chance to be tied for third going into the Christmas holiday. This upbeat opportunity is music to Concordia’s ears, as they are continuing to improve from last season when they finished eighth in the league and had a 9-13 overall record. The biggest turnaround so far has been the up-tempo offensive and defensive pressure the Cobbers have shown, and their ability to win the tight game. Last year Concordia played 12 games that went into overtime or were determined by six or fewer points, they had a record of 6-6 in those games. This season they have already played four close games, and own a stellar 3-1 record. Joe Snowden (Sr., St. Paul, MN) continues to belie his name, as he has been hotter than the pavement in Texas in July. He has rung up 20 points in three of the Cobbers six games and is averaging 19 points a game. The supporting cast for Concordia continues to step up to the challenge as different player assert themselves in each game. Last Saturday Chris Thomas (So., Sioux Falls, SD) picked the team up in the pivotal stretch during the last minutes of the first half, and the opening minutes of the second half.

From the “go figure” department: during the first two league games,  Concordia is last in the league in scoring yet first in field goal percentage.

The Cobbers will have three weeks off before their next game, when they travel to Northfield to take on Carleton on January 6th. Their next home game is January 10th against perennial MIAC power St. Thomas. That will be the second game of a crucial back-to-back away-home series with Gustavus and the Tommies.

Hamline (0-2 in the MIAC, 0-6 Overall)
Hamline is still searching for their first win of the season. They are currently 0-2 in league play and 0-6 overall. They have played a tough non-conference schedule, losing in overtime to Crown College in the season opener 89-86. The other defeats came at the hands of UW-LaCrosse, UW-River Falls and Division II opponent Augustana (SD). John Simonsen (Sr., Fairfax, MN) is the Pipers offensive threat. He leads the team in scoring and three-point field goals. Mike Grandbois (Sr., New Town, ND) runs the offense from the point guard spot, he has 17 assists on the year.  From the “little known facts” department: Grandbois is one of only three players on Hamline’s roster from outside of Minnesota. New Town, ND is located in the western part of North Dakota, 341 miles from Concordia’s campus.

The History: Hamline leads the series 70-43.
Last year Concordia swept the series, winning 68-65 at home and 71-65 on the road. Joe Ford  (Grand Forks, ND) was the high scorer in both games, putting up 18 points in the first contest and 17 in the second. The series between these two teams dates back to February 19, 1922 when Hamline won a 26-21 thriller. Hamline is the birth place of college basketball in Minnesota having started intercollegiate hoops in early 1900’s.
