12/09 Concordia Runs Past St. Olaf 70-46.

Concordia started slow, put their game into high gear and then coasted to a 70-46 victory over St. Olaf. The Cobbers and Oles were within four points of each other for the first 12 minutes of the game, and then Concordia finally found their shooting touch to pull away to a 33-20 lead at the half. After the half Concordia picked up where they left off and continued to push the ball up the floor and came away with the 26 point victory. Junior guard Mandy Berggren (Cokato, MN) sparked the Cobbers run late in the first half and finished with 15 points, her season high. She was a solid 3-for-5 from three-point range. Sara Spears (Sr., Spicer, MN) led all scores with 16 and she also pulled down 10 rebounds to record her second double-double of theseason. Cara Battles led all Ole scorers with eight.

With the victory the Cobbers remain unbeaten in the MIAC at 2-0 and mover their overall record to 4-1. St. Olaf drops to 1-3 in league play and 3-4 overall.  Concordia will host Hamline on Saturday, December 16th at 2:00 in their final contest before the Christmas holiday.

Game Day Preview

The Headline:
Cobbers Click Their Heels and Get to Come Home

The Preview:
Concordia (1-0 in the MIAC,  3-1 Overall)
Concordia is finally playing at  home! After 3 non-conference games, 1 MIAC game and almost 2 months of practice, the Cobbers have a home game. Concordia is coming off their MIAC opener, a 68-58 victory over Augsburg on Wednesday. Concordia has been led by the inside and outside combination of Sara Spears (Sr., Spicer, MN) and Brandi Myers (Sr., Glyndon, MN) who are both averaging 13 points per game. Spears is also leading the team in rebounds as she is averaging 9.5 per game. (That is almost a double-double per game!)  Myers also has the dubious honor of leading the team in fouls committed. She has fouled out of three of the four games played. On the flip side Myers only needs 33 points to eclipse the 1000 point barrier in her career. She would be the  16th player in Concordia women's history to score 1000 points in a career.

The Cobbers have received a great spark off the bench from Kasey Bostow (So., Fargo, ND) who is the third leading scorer on the team, averaging 9.8 points per game. In Wednesday's game she kept the Auggies from getting close in the final minutes of the game. She scored a team-high 19 points, 13 of which were in the second half, when the game was on the line.

St. Olaf (1-2 in the MIAC, 3-3 Overall)
St. Olaf started the season on a hot streak as they won their first two games, and three of their first four. Since then they have dropped a two out of three in MIAC.  The Oles started the season by beating Iowa foe Buena Vista 76-74 in a nail biter, and then outdistanced Pomona Pitzer (CA) in California 73-68. They lost their second game of the West Coast swing 84-72 to Claremont.  Since returning home the Oles are 1-2 and searching for that early season magic. Their lone victory came at Hamline 65-64, while their losses have been to nationally ranked Gustavus 70-52 and on Wednesday against a much improved St. Mary's team 82-72. Elisa Hatlevig (Sr., Rushford, MN) leads St. Olaf  in scoring and rebounds. She, like Spears, averages close to a double-double. She is averaging 10.3 points per game and 9 rebounds. Carrie Cooley (Jr., Villard, MN) is the team's offensive playmaker, leading the team in assists. She is very familiar with the court in Memorial Auditorium having played in the 1998 Minnesota State Tournament at Concordia. Unfortunately her high school team, Minnewaska, lost to Crookston 54-46.

The History:
Concordia leads the series 40-6.
Last year Concordia swept the series, winning 64-60 at St. Olaf and 72-53 at Concordia. Kasey Bostow was the Cobbers leading scorer in both games hanging up 18 and 19 points against the Oles. At one time in this series Concordia had won 24 straight. A streak that lasted from 1985 until 1996. Since then Concordia is 4-2 against their rivals from Northfield.
