12/16 Concordia Pulls Away From
Hamline 75-52.
Concordia used a season high 21 steals to pull away from Hamline 75-52. The Cobbers could not get farther than 12 ponts ahead throughout the game, as Hamline refused to give up and ountered continuously. The Pipers could not get closer than six points, and eventually the up-tempo style the Cobbers employed wore them down. Concordia was led by an umlikely trio, as Mandy Berggren (Jr., Cokato, MN), Kasey Bostow (So., Fargo, ND) and Katrina Wilberts (So., Breckenridge, MN) all finished with over 10 points. Berggren had 15 point for the second straight game, Bostow chipped in 12 and Wilberts had 10. Brandi Myers followed her eight steal performance last weekend with a nine theft game. She finished with nine points and needs 19 points to join the 1000 point club at Concordia. The forced 28 Hamline turnovers and held them to only 23 field goals on the day. Jessica Barrett and Stacey Thill were the leading scorers for the Pipers. Barrett led all scorers with 17 while Thill put up 15. Concordia remains perfect in the league at 3-0 and moves to 5-1 overall.
Hamline drops to 0-3 in league play and 0-6 overall. The Cobbers will now
have an extended break as their next game will be January 3rd at
St. Catherine at 7:30.

Game Day Preview
The Headline: Cobbers Hoping to Pass Final
Test Before Christmas
The Preview:
Concordia (2-0 in the MIAC, 4-1 Overall)
The tests are over, the papers written and the
projects completed. Now comes the final test before Christmas vacation,
the Hamline Pipers. So far Concordia is undefeated in the MIAC, and first
year coach Sara Cepek is steering the team on the right course
to venture into the long days of January and February. Along with
their undefeated record the Cobbers have posted some impressive numbers
along the way. They are currently leading the MIAC in 3-point field goal
percentage and on the defensive end they are leading in opponent’s shooting
percentage. Concordia also has a pair of individual MIAC leaders. Brandi
Myers (Sr., Glyndon, MN), known for her ability to score, leads the MIAC
in assists while first year player Trisha Steinborn (Jamestown, ND) is
on top in 3-point shooting percentage. The Cobbers are also doing a mean
Rodney Dangerfield impersonation this year, of the four MIAC teams that
have one loss overall, only Concordia is not ranked in the top 25. To add
insult to injury, the two opponents the Cobbers defeated in non-conference
action, UW-Oshkosh and Luther, are also among the ranked teams.
Concordia continues to be led by the “inside-outside connection”. Sara Spears (Sr., Spicer, MN) leads the team in scoring and rebounding from the blocks, while Brandi Myers is second in scoring and leads the team in assists and steals from the perimeter. She has 23 steals in the first five games, and had an amazing eight against St. Olaf last Saturday, all this while fouling out of 3 of the 5 games. She is currently on pace to break the school record for most steals in a season. The theft record is held by Kristi Schultz (’93, Wheaton, MN), who had 118 steals in the 1991-92 season.
Hamline (0-2 in the MIAC, 0-5 Overall)
Hamline enters today’s game as one of the three
teams in the league that are winless on the season. Despite not having
a victory, the Pipers have played some close games, losing to the Cobbers
opponent last week, St. Olaf, by one point. The only other common opponent
with Concordia is UW-River Falls, Hamline lost to the Falcons 60-51
while the Cobbers fell 71-56. Hamline is led by junior guard Stacey Thill
(Parkville, MO), who leads the team in scoring, averaging 13.3 points,
and steals. The inside threat for the Pipers is Jessica Barrett (Fr.,
Annandale, MN) who is second in scoring, 12.2 per game, and has attempted
twice as many free throws than anyone else on the team.
The History:
Concordia leads the series 36-1.
Last year the Cobbers swept the series winning
78-52 at home and 87-72 in St. Paul. In both games Brandi Myers was the
leading scorer putting up 18 in the first game and 19 in the second. In
that second game Myers, Spears and guard Mandy Berggren (Jr., Cokato, MN)
combined for 53 of the 87 points.
