1/15 Concordia Goes Inside to Beat St. Mary's 82-62.
Concordia used a dominating inside game to power past St. Mary's 82-62. The Cobbers found success from close range, and ended up shooting  31-for-62 (.500) from the field for the game. The other key for Concordia was a suffocating defense. For the second straight game the Cobbers forced over 25 turnovers and had over 15 steals. Against the Cardinals, Concordia finished with 18 steals and forced St. Mary's into 29 turnovers.

Concordia started to take control from the opening tip, and established an eight point lead early. After the two teams traded turnovers, Concordia was able to pull away at half, and take a 38-23 lead into halftime. The Cobbers were paced by Kasey Bostow (So., Fargo, ND)  in the first half who put up 14 points and established a presence inside.

After the break Concordia quickly broke free, and pushed the lead to 26 points. The Cobbers would never let St. mary's get to within 20 points the rest of the game. Once again Brandi Myers (Sr, Glyndon, MN) led all scorers with 18 points, as she continues to lead the MIAC in scoring. She also added nine steals. Casey Bostow finished with 17 and Mandy Berggren (Jr., Cokato, MN) and Katrina Wilberts (So., Breckenridge, MN) both added 13. Steph Losch (Sr., Hallock, MN) came off the bench to help the defense and hauled down a game-high seven rebounds.

Concordia improves to 7-2 in the MIAC and 9-3 overall, while St. Mary's slips to 4-4 in league play and 4-6 overall. The Cobbers will travel to St. Joseph, MN to play a key MIAC game with St. Ben's on Wednesday, January 17th at 7:30.

Game Day Preview

The Headline:
Cobbers Looking to Stay Within Striking Distance.

The Preview:
Concordia (6-2 in the MIAC, 8-3 Overall)
Concordia is in a stretch where they will play 7 games in 15 days.  They are currently 2-2 in the crucial stretch that will take them to the end of January. Since the league voted to have a 6-team playoff at the end of the season, the Cobbers are hoping to remain within striking distance of MIAC leaders, St. Ben's and St. Thomas. If the Cobbers can finish in the top three of the league they will assure themselves of at least one home playoff game.

On Saturday Concordia traveled to St. Paul and stole a 70-58 victory from Macalester. The Cobbers had 26 steals and forced 37 turnovers. Steph Losch (Sr., Hallock, MN) led the band of thieves with six steals. Every Cobber player had at least one theft and the team total of 26 steals is a season high.

St. Mary’s (4-3 in the MIAC, 4-5 Overall)
St. Mary's is one of the surprise teams of the MIAC so far this season. They are currently in fifth place, and are jockeying for position for the final playoff spots. Last year the Cardinals finished sixth in the MIAC. They are coming off a tough loss at Carleton, 69-55. In that game St. Mary's shot 70% in the first half  and led 34-29 at the break. In the second half, however, the Cardinals managed just six field goals and scored just 21 points. The loss put an end to a two-game winning streak St. Mary's had going into the game.

St. Mary's is led by sophomore Jenny Gilles (Keizer, OR) who leads the team in scoring with a 13.2 PPG average. Providing the size for the Cardinals is Stacy Hammel (Jr., Manitowoc, WI) and Jenny Rehm  (Fr., Woodbury, MN). Hammel leads the team in rebounds, averaging 7.3 per game and Rehm is the team shot blocker with 18 on the season.
