1/17 Concordia Upsets Nationally
Ranked St. Ben's 71-55.
Concordia upset nationally ranked, and previously unbeaten in MIAC
play, St. Ben's 71-55. The Cobbers used a fierce inside game from Sara
Spears (Sr., Spicer, MN) to hand the Blazers their first conference loss,
and defeat St. Ben's for the first time since 1996. Spears proved to be
too much to handle as she finished with a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds.
It was her third double-double of the season.
St. Ben's took an early lead and threatened to pull away as leading scorer Michelle Barlau took control and put the Blazers up by six. The Cobbers answered with a key run late in the first half and went into halftime with a 32-26 lead. After the break St. Ben's would rally and close the gap but Concordia kept inching away and led by 15 with just over six minutes to play, and St. Ben's would never threaten after that point. In addition to the play of Spears, the Cobbers received inside help from Sarah Jacobson (Sr., Fargo, ND) who finished with a season-high 10 rebounds, and Kasey Bostow (So., Fargo, ND) who contributed 11 points off the bench.
Concordia tightens the MIAC race and improves to 8-2 in league play, and 10-3 overall. St. Ben's suffers their first MIAC loss of the season and falls to 8-1. They are 10-2 overall. The Cobbers will travel to St. Paul on Saturday, January 20th to take on Bethel at 1:00.
