Concordia Storms Back in 2nd
Half, Beats St. Olaf 76-68.
Trailing by as many as 12 points in the second half, Concordia stormed
back to beat St. Olaf 76-68. The Cobbers used a rally midway through the
final period to overcome a double digit deficit and pick up their 15th
win of the season. Sara Spears (Sr., Spicer, MN), gaining momentum with
each game, scored a game-high 18 points and collected 10 rebounds. It was
her second consecutive game recording a double-double, and her sixth of
the season. Brandi Myers (Sr, Glyndon, MN) shot only 38% from the field
but still finished with 16 points.
Concordia found themselves in a hole early on, as St. Olaf came out on a terror and hit for five 3-point baskets within the first six minutes of the game. The Cobbers could never get the margin to under six points and went into halftime trailing 40-30.
Concordia came out in the second half and went on a 6-2 run, but then the two teams traded points until midway through the half when the Cobbers went on their decisive run. Trisha Steinborn (Fr., Jamestown, ND) hit clutch baskets from outside along the way, and Katrina Wilberts (So., Breckenridge, MN) helped Spears inside to whittle away at the Ole lead. Concordia finally took control at the 10:06 mark when Spears connected on a free throw and the Cobbers had the lead 55-54. Concordia continued to pressure St. Olaf, and quickly built the lead to six by the eight minute mark.
Besides the leadership of Myers and Spears, Trisha Steinborn finished with a career-high 15 points and Katrina Wilberts added 11.
Concordia wins their eighth straight game, their longest streak since
the 1996-97 season, and improves to 13-2 in the MIAC and 15-3 overall.
St. Olaf, who is battling for the sixth and final MIAC playoff spot, falls
to 5-9 in the league and 7-10 overall. The Cobbers will play host to Carleton
on Saturday at 1:00 for a pivotal game in the MIAC title chase.
