2/17 Concordia Rolls Over Bethel
89-73.
Concordia capped the regular season by rolling over Bethel in a 89-73
victory.
Sara Spears (Sr., Spicer, MN) lit up senior day by scoring 16 points
and grabbing a game-high 18 rebounds. It is the seventh double-double on
the year for the senior. Bethel (4-17, 4-20) was led by Beth Carlson who
scored 22 points and had 11 rebounds. MVP candidate Laura Jacobs was held
to 15 points and 10 rebounds, it was her 12th double-double of the season.
The two teams traded baskest early before Bethel pulled away to a six-point lead at 25-19. Concordia (16-5, 18-6) proceeded to put together a 14-0 run, and grab a lead they would never relinquish. The Cobbers pushed the lead to as many as 15 before heading into the lockerrom with a 48-37 halftime lead.
Bethel started the second half with a 12-4 run to cut the lead to three at 52-49. After three straight turnovers by the Royals which the Cobbers turned into six points by Kasey Bostow (So., Fargo, ND), Brandi Myers (Sr, Glyndon, MN) and Mandy Berggren (Jr., Cokato, MN), the lead was back to double digits and Concordia would never be threatened again. For the game the Cobbers scored 32 points off of 27 Bethel turnovers. Steph Losch (Sr., Hallock, MN) had a game-high five steals on the afternoon.
Senior Brandi Myers led all scorers with 23, and she is currently tied for the school and MIAC record in career 3-point baskets at 162. Kasey Bostow establishhed her presence underneath and came away with 13 points.
Concordia concluded the regular season and will host a first round MIAC
Tournament game on Monday at 7:30. Their opponent will be determined late
this afternoon as play concludes in the MIAC.

The Key Statistic: Free Throws
Get ready for multiple trips to the free throw line today. Concordia
and Bethel are among the top four in the league in free throw attempts.
The last time the two teams played, they went to the charity stripe a staggering
70 times. Bethel has won two of their last three games, and in the wins
they held a considerable margin in free throw attempts. The Cobbers are
second in the MIAC in free throw attempts. Leading the way for the Cobbers
is Sara Spears who is 106-for-147 from the line. In contrast Bethel's team
leader is Laura Jacobs who pays taxes for her residency at the foul line.
She has attempted 176 free throws. 163 of those attempts have come in league
games. She leads the league in that category by 82. To put perspective
on the statistic, she has twice as many free throws as the second place
player in the category.
The Key Match-Up: Concordia Defense
vs. Laura Jacobs - Beth
Laura Jacobs is having a MVP season. She will probably get passed over
in the voting in favor of someone who plays for one of the league leaders.
She currently leads the league in scoring and rebounds. She is the queen
of the double-double. In 11 games this year she has collected at least
10 points and 10 rebounds. She has missed the feat four other times by
a single rebound. Her season high in rebounds is 22. Concordia's team leader
in double-doubles is Sara Spears who has six. In the last meeting between
the teams, Jacobs had 19 points and eight rebounds. The Cobbers were able
to neutralize her rebounding ability by using several players to keep her
off the glass. Sarah Jacobson had a team-high seven rebounds and Sara Spears
had 5.
The History: Concordia Leads the Series
31-9.
The Cobbers have won the last seven meetings between the two schools.
Before that string Bethel won four straight, from 1994 to 1996. The high-point
for the Royals women's basketball program came in the 1995-96 season when
they finished second in the league and went to the finals of the sectionals
in the NCAA tournament. Concordia and Bethel hooked up in the first round
of the NCAA playoffs that year, with Bethel coming out on top 64-60. That
was the last time the Cobbers have been to the NCAA tournament.
