5/01 Two Concordia Players Earn
Lutheran Brotherhood All-American Honors.
Two Concordia women's basketball players were honored with Lutheran
Brotherhood All-American Honors. Senior Brandi
Myers (Glyndon, Minn.) was named First Team All-American and Sara
Spears (Spicer, Minn.) was named Second Team All-American.
Fifteen players from 21 NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA colleges were
named to the team.
“Lutheran colleges throughout the country are encouraging students to excel through sports and other activities, including academics,” said David Angstadt, chief marketing officer, Lutheran Brotherhood. “These basketball stars are also achievers in the classroom and even give back to the community in their spare time.”
The Lutheran Brotherhood Lutheran College All-American basketball teams honor outstanding players at Lutheran colleges across the country. Athletes were nominated by sports information directors (SIDs) at their institutions. A selection committee comprised of SIDs from Lutheran colleges, sports writers and Lutheran Brotherhood representatives determined the final team.
It is the second consecutive year that Myers has been honored by the Lutheran Brotherhood organization. Last year she was named to the Honorable mention All-American team. It is the first year for Spears to be honored with the award.
The 2000-01 season was a record setting year for the two players as they both became members of the 1,000-point club for Concordia women's basketball. Myers ended her career with 1,314 points which places her fifth on the school's all-time scoring list. Spears finished with 1,148 points and she ends her career ninth on the scoring list.
Myers was named to the all conference team for the third straight year. She also set a new MIAC record for career 3-point shots made. She eclipsed fellow Cobber Cathy Johnson (1988-92) to accomplish the feat. Her mark of 164 is two better than Johnson's old mark of 162. She also missed setting the school record in career steals by just seven thefts. She finished her four years with 291 steals which fall short of the mark set by Kristi Schultz (1989-93) at 298. Myers finished second in the league in scoring, averaging 17.14 points per game.
Spears was also named to the all-conference team for the third straight
year. She finished the season tied for third in the MIAC in rebounding.
She averaged eight rebounds per game in league play. She also put herself
in the top ten in career rebounds at Concordia. Her four-year total of
759 is sixth on the school's all-time rebounding list. Despite playing
inside for her career Spears quick hands helped her to add her name to
the all-time steals list as well. She has 194 steals which places her sixth
on the school's all-time career steals chart.
