2/16 Concordia Shuts Down Augsburg
2-1.
Concordia continued to use a stingy defense and received timely scoring
to beat Augsburg 2-1. The Cobbers continue to roll, as they won for the
second straight game and have now won 9 out of their past 11 games. Shyla
Wilson (So., Cohasset, MN, Grand Rapids, HS) resumed her torrid goaltending
as she stopped 34 shots and picked up her tenth win of the year.
Concordia (9-8-0, 13-8-0) scored twice in the first period and let the defense do the rest, to add to their school record win total. Lindsay Kurtis (Fr., Phoenix, AZ). picked up her 17th goal of the year to open the scoring at 13:11. The Cobbers would receive the game-winner from Teka Parks (Fr., Seattle, WA) at 17:52 on a less than spectacular goal that somehow slid into the net. After that Augsburg (8-9, 11-11) carried the play and continually went to the net, testing Wilson all game long. The Auggies finally were able to score at 9:12 of the second period when Amber Nadreau scored her ninth goal of the year.
The teams skated through a tight third period as they were only able to throw 10 total shots on net. For the game Augsburg outshot Concordia 35-13. Katie Fedoryk made 11 saves in the losing effort.
The two teams play finish the series tomorrow at 2:00. Concordia has the chance to finish fifth if they win again. That would be the highest finish ever for the young Concordia women's program.

The Headline: Cobbers Cap Record Breaking Season!
The Teams:
Concordia (8-8 in the MIAC, 12--8-0 Overall)
Concordia is playing their final series of the year, and what a year
it has been. The Cobbers have broken school records for most wins in a
season, most wins in a MIAC season, most goals in a game, most goals in
a season, etc.,etc.,etc. Concordia even
has two players in the top ten in scoring in NCAA Dicision III. First
year player Lindsay Kurtis is second in scoring with 49 points and leads
the nation in assists with 33. Sophomore Katie Jacques is fourth in scoring
with 40 points and second in goals with 28. Concordia has defeated two
nationally ranked teams the past two weeks. Two weekends ago they swept
UW-Superior who was ranked seventh at the time, and last weekend they split
with St. Mary's who was ranked third. All these milestones have taken place
in only the second year of the program. As the song goes, "the future is
so bright I have to wear shades." The Cobbers have a chance to finish as
high as fifth place or as low as seventh. They are currently in a three-way
tie with St. Ben's and, tonight' s opponent, Augsburg. St. Ben's has a
series with bottom-dwellar St. Olaf this weekend and should come away with
four points. That means the Cobbers will need to sweep Augsburg to finish
in a tie for fifth. Concordia is 8-2 since the Christmas break and has
outscored their opponents 43-17 during that stretch.
Goaltender Shyla Wilson was named the MIAC Player of the Week. She
earned the honor for stopping 76 of the 79 shots she faced
in the weekend split with league-leading St. Mary's. On Friday night she
stopped 38 shots, and kept the Cobbers
close, until midway through the third period. On Saturday she recorded
her first shutout of the season by stopping all 38 shots she faced. It
was only the third time St. Mary's has been shut out this season, and the
win broke the Cardinals' nine-game win streak.
Augsburg (8-8 in the MIAC, 11-10-0 Overall)
Augsburg is struggling through an up-and-down season. After last year's
banner season when they made it to the championship game of the American
Women's College Hockey Alliance postseason tournament the table was set
to make another run into postseason. The Auggies have fallen victim to
inconsistent scoring. In their eight conference losses they have only scored
seven total goals. They have been outscored in those games 28-7. In their
eight conference victories they have outscored the opponents 61-9. Augsburg
is led by Angie Rieger and Stephanie Johnson. Rieger leads the team in
points and goals, and is currently ninth in the league in scoring. Johnson
is second on the team in scoring and assists. The top goaltender for the
Auggies is Katie Fedoryk who has played in 12 games and has a 2.08 goals
against average. She is fifth in the league in GA and third in save percentage.
Augsburg traveled to Connecticut this season for a two-game road trip.
They beat Wesleyan University 5-2 and played an exhibition game against
Wayne State University.
