Game Story

Cobbers Lose Offensive Thriller to St. Thomas 38-35.
Brian Martodam (Sr., Hawley, Minn.) hauls in a third quarter TD pass from Ryan Hebrink (So., Sacred Heart, Minn.) in the Cobbers' 38-35 loss to St. Thomas.

(Moorhead, Minn.) ---Concordia and St. Thomas dueled through four quarters of exciting offensive football, only to have the Tommies pull out a 38-35 victory in the closing minutes of the opening game of the MIAC season. In a case of last team to score wins - St. Thomas quarterback Nick Ambrasas found receiver Justin Hall in the corner of the end zone with 2:54 left in the game, to erase a four point deficit, and give the Tommies the three-point victory. Concordia came up short on the ensuing drive when Jeff Hertel took a pitch on fourth and 22 and scampered for 21 yards before Matt Boro made the tackle to end the Cobbers come-from-behind hopes.

The two teams combined for over 900 yards in total offense as they raced up and down the field. Both quarterbacks were able to move their teams with ease and each threw for three touchdowns. Sophomore Ryan Hebrink (Sacred Heart, Minn.) was 17-for-32 in passing attempts and threw for 234 yards for Concordia. He connected on touchdowns of 15, 6 and 5 yards. His counterpart Nick Ambrasas was 19-for-32 and threw for 323 yards. His scoring strikes were a bit longer, going for 17, 40 and 25 yards.

The game started slowly as both teams failed to score in the opening quarter but that changed midway through the second quarter when St. Thomas took the lead on a Jake Barkley four yard run. Concordia answered quickly on their next possesion and running back Ben Schermerhorn (Sr., Bagley, Minn.) capped the drive on a one yard plunge.

Ambrasas was able to drive the Tommies late in the second quarter and found Andy Kaiser on a 17 yard pass to put St. Thomas ahead 14-7. Hebrink answered for the Cobbers as he marched down the field in nine plays and connected with Raleigh Schmidt (Sr., Tracy, Minn.) on a 15 yard scoring strike. Jeremy Hinderks' (So., Renville, Minn.) extra point attempt sailed wide and St. Thomas held a 14-13 advantage at half time.

In the third quarter Concordia struck quickly, taking the kick and marching 59 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. Hebrink threaded the ball to tight end Brian Martodam (Sr., Hawley, Minn.) for the score. He then found Jake Olson (Sr., Crookston, Minn.) in the back of the end zone for the two-point conversion and Concordia was ahead for the first time in the game.

St. Thomas would score the next two touchdowns on a Barkley three-yard run, his second TD of the game and a 40 yard over-the-shoulder grab from Andrew Hilliard. Concordia closed the quarter with a 10 play drive and Schermerhorn punched his second TD of the game over from three yards out to even the score at 28 through three quarters.

The only field goal of the game, and the winning margin of victory came at 10:02 of the fourth quarter when Brian Lynch hit from 20 yards out and gave the Tommies a 31-28 lead. Hebrink once again rallied the Cobber offense and proceeded to engineer a 14-play drive that culminated in his third touchdown pass of the day, this time a five yard strike to Robert Clark (So., Seeley Lake, Mont.). That set the stage for Ambrasas and the five play drive for the winning score.

Joel Ferrie (Sr., Moorhead, Minn) was the leading rusher for Concordia, gaining 86 yards on 16 attempts. Schmidt caught eight passes for 121 yards to lead the Cobber receivers. St. Thomas was led by junior Barkley who ran for 171 yards on 32 attempts and receiver Andrew Hilliard who had a career-high 191 yards on 10 catches.

Defensively the Cobbers were led by senior linebackers Erik Gilder (Sr., Florence, Mont.)and Andy Shaffer (Sr., Monticello, Minn.) who plugged up the middle of the defense and finished with 6.5 tackles each. The leading tackler in the game for Concordia was Adam Bakker (Sr., Walker, Minn.) who had 8.5 tackles. St. Thomas linebacker Rick Joslin had a tremendous game leading the way with 16 tackles.

Clark electrified the crowd with his special teams play, returning six kicks for 140 yards.

Concordia drops to 0-1 in the conference and 1-1 overall, while the Tommies even their record at 1-1. The Cobbers travel to St. Paul next weekend to take on Macalester. St. Thomas will host Carleton.
