Cobbers Get Run Over by St. Thomas 8-0, 4-1.

try and beat out an infield hit. |
Concordia struggled to handle the base running pressure that St. Thomas deployed and lost twice to the visiting Tommies 8-0, 4-1.
In the first game St. Thomas (8-0, 21-5) scored one run in the first and then broke open the game in the second with five runs on five hits. They added a single run in the third and fourth innings, and lefthanded pitcher Stacy Tamble shut Concordia (4-4, 10-8) down for five innings before the eight-run rule was invoked. The opening run for the Tommies was a microcosm of how the day went for the Cobbers. After getting the leadoff batter in the game to fly out, the Cobbers surrendered a single to Michelle Wong. Wong promptly stole second and then third and scored when the Cobbers were unable to handle the throw from catcher Jill Pontius (Sr., Eagle Bend, Minn.).
Concordia managed to pick up only two hits in the first game. Jill Flatau (Jr., Perham, Minn.) went 1-for-1 for the game in her only plate appearance.
Defensive miscues cost the Cobbers in the second game. Concordia committed five errors in the nightcap of the twinbill, and tow of the four runs that pitcher Erin Gunderson (Sr., Princeton, Minn.) conceded were unearned. St. Thomas scored a single run in each of the first and second innings before Concordia was able to string together three consecutive scoreless innings. During that stretch the Cobbers cut the lead to 2-1 when Pontius hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. It was her third home run of the season, and came off of Tommie pitcher Andrea Sweeney who had only allowed one run in her three previous conference starts.
The deficit stayed at one until the sixth inning, when Allyson Rohrbach
singled home Melissa Konsti with two outs after Rohrbach had stole second.
The Tommies added an insurance run in the seventh to bring the final
score to 4-1.
Concordia will finish out their four doubleheader homestand when they host St. Ben's on Thursday at 4:00pm. St. Thomas will turn around and host Carleton, tomorrow afternoon at 4:00pm.
