Cobbers Work Overtime To Earn First MIAC Point.
Sylvester Ndhlovu (Harare, Zimbabwe) tries to win the ball in the air.

(Moorhead, Minn.)-- One week after Concordia won their first overtime game in two years, the Cobbers picked up their first MIAC point in two seasons. Concordia and Bethel played to a 1-1 tie in Moorhead in the MIAC opener for both teams.

The Cobbers got on the board early when first-year player Brandon Root (Fr., Fargo N.Dak./Fargo South HS) collected a pass from Jerry Nathan (Fargo N.Dak./Fargo South HS) and cut the ball past two Bethel defenders before hammering the ball high into the net. The goal came at the 2:15 mark and gave Concordia a 1-0 lead and the early momentum. After holding back the Cobber offense in the early stages, the Royals were able to establish their offense in the middle stages of the opening half. Bethel tied the game with just under 13 minutes to go until halftime. Ben Powers intercepted an errant Cobber pass in the middle of the field and raced 40 yards to slot the ball past goalie Kris Overby (Sr., Fargo, N.Dak./Fargo South HS).

Both teams had chances in the second half with the best opportunity belonging to Concordia. With time running down in regulation, Sylvester Ndhlovu (So., Harare, Zimbabwe/HGIC HS) slipped the ball to Nwachukwu Chukwualoa (Jr., Lagos, Nigeria/HGIC HS) who found himself all alone, six yards out from the Royals net. With just the keeper to beat, Chukwualoa fired the ball over the top of the net.

Concordia was able to carry the play in overtime, outshooting Bethel 7-2 in the two extra periods. For the game Bethel had a 25-22 edge in shots. Overby made 16 saves in the Cobber goal while Bethel goaltender Eric Berg turned aside 8 shots.

Concordia will travel to St. Peter on Saturday, September 20 to take on nationally-ranked Gustavus at 1:00pm.
