Cobbers Take Giant Step Towards the Playoffs; Beat St. Olaf 4-3 in 2OT.
Betsy Olesen #16 (Fr., Bismarck, N.Dak.) goes up for a head ball off of a corner kick in Concordia's 4-3 double overtime win over St. Olaf.

(Moorhead, Minn.)-- Concordia took a giant step towards making the inaugural MIAC playoffs by beating St. Olaf 4-3 in double overtime at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex. With the win, Concordia sets a school record for most conference wins in a season. The Cobbers are now 6-2-1 in the MIAC and 10-5-1 overall. St. Olaf drops to 5-3-1 in conference play and 8-7-1 overall.

Entering the game, both teams were tied for the fourth, and final, postseason berth with identical 5-2-1 conference records. After the game, the Cobbers jumped ahead of the Ole's by two points and more importantly hold the advantage in the head-to-head tie-breaking procedure. Both teams have two games left in the regular season.

The game was dominated by a strong northerly wind, that blew from one end of the field to the other. St. Olaf went with the wind in the first half and came away with a 2-1 lead despite conceding the opening goal of the game. Concordia scored at 7:49 when Amy Ravenhorst (Fr., Hollandale, Minn./Albert Lea HS) headed home a Suzy Grabko (Fr., Fargo, N.Dak./Fargo North HS) cross for her fifth goal of the season. The Ole's tied the game, and then went ahead, in a span of seven minutes. At 27:42, Brie Messick notched her sixth goal of the season and then at 34:28 Kelsey Watt took advantage of a Cobber defensive miscue to give St. Olaf the one-goal lead.

Less than five minutes after the break, Ravenhorst scored her second goal of the game to tie the score at 2-2. The Ole's countered with a goal against the wind when a Cobber defender handled the ball in the box and Watt converted the ensuing penalty kick. It was her tenth goal of the year and tied her with Kaia Knutson for the team lead.

Morgan Bain (Fr., Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) tied the game at the 73:31 mark when she finished off a dead ball that was started by Carmelle Johnson (Jr., Northridge, Calif./Hamilton HS). It was another key goal for Bain, who leads the Cobbers in scoring with eight goals and four game-winning goals. Concordia was unable to get the winner in regulation even thought the wind picked up at times and the Ole's were unable to clear the ball out of their defensive half of the field.

Neither team was able to score in the first overtime period as the Cobbers were forced to do most of the work in their defensive third of the field because of St. Olaf's advantage with the wind. The game was finally settled less than two minutes into the second overtime period. The Cobbers were awarded a corner kick and Johnson was able to head home the service from Grabko for the winner. It was only the second goal of the season for Johnson.

Concordia held the advantage in shots on goal and corner kicks. The Cobbers outshot the Ole's 19-12 and had a 10-9 advantage in corner kicks. Cobber goalkeeper Jamie Savage (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn./Rosemount HS) made six saves in picking up her ninth win of the season. St. Olaf goalie Kara Olson made seven saves in the losing effort.

The Cobbers will play at Hamline on Wednesday, October 29 at 2:30pm before finishing the regular season by hosting at St. Ben's on Saturday, November 1 at 1:00pm.
