Cobbers Hand Bucky Burgau Record-Setting 500th Career Win as a Cobber!!!
Series Recap:
(Northfield, Minn.)-- In what has become
a season of milestones for Cobber baseball coach Bucky Burgau, Concordia
swept Carleton 11-1 and 10-5 to give Burgau his 500th career win as head
coach of the Cobbers. Earlier this month, Burgau became the first coach
in the history of the MIAC to win 300 conference games. Burgau, in his
26th year as head coach of the Cobbers, ups his overall Concordia record
to 501-365-6. He is currently 308-177 in conference play.
With the two victories, the Cobbers run their winning streak to ten games, the second longest streak in school history. Last year the Cobbers also fashioned a 10-game victory streak. That string is second only to the 1995 Cobbers who started the season by winning their first 12 games. Concordia is now 9-3 in the MIAC and 17-10 overall. They remain in third place in the MIAC after league-leading St. Olaf and second-place St. Thomas both swept their series this afternoon.
First-Year outfielder Chris Klabo (Fr., Brainerd, Minn.) single-handedly beat the Knights and their pitching staff. Klabo went 3-for-4 with three home runs and collected eight RBI's in the opener, and then went 2-for-4 with another home run and three more RBI's in the nightcap. His three home runs and eight RBI's in game one are single game school records. All told, he batted .625, had an on-base percentage of .667 and had a slugging percentage of 2.125. He also extended his hitting streak to nine games, which matches the longest streak by any Cobber this season.
In the first game, Klabo led off the game with his first home run, and then added to his total in the fourth inning. Concordia broke open the game in the decisive fourth frame. The Cobbers scored sent nine batters to the plate, benefited from five free passes and scored six times. The major blow was Klabo's two-out grand slam down the left field line. Klabo tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning when he connected on his record-breaking third long ball. He smashed his three-run shot deep over the left-center fence.
Carleton only managed one run in the sixth inning, as NCAA Division III National Pitcher of the Week Jeremy Hinderks (Sr., Renville, Minn./R-C-W HS) pitched his seventh consecutive complete game. Hinderks allowed one earned run, scattered nine hits, walked only one and struck out seven. He is now 6-2 on the year.
The second game was a more tightly contested affair. After Concordia jumped to a 6-1 lead in the top of the third inning, Carleton responded by hanging four runs on Cobber starter Brian Schumacher (So., Thompson, N.D./Thompson HS) in the bottom of the frame. The relief tandem of Bryan Romsa (Jr., Great Falls, Mont./Great Falls HS) and Ryan Hebrink (Sr., Sacred Heart, Minn./R-C-W HS) shut the door on the Knights offense from that point, and only allowed two hits in the final four innings. Romsa was credited with his fourth win of the year and Hebrink recorded his third save of the season.
Concordia staked themselves to a four-run lead in the top of the fourth inning when they scored three runs on two hits and a pair of Carleton errors. Fittingly, Klabo scored the final run of the series when he was knocked home in the top of the seventh inning. After reaching first on a single to left field, he advanced to third base on a wild pitch and an infield out. He later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Luther Kangas (Sr., Vadnais Heights, Minn., White Bear Lake HS).
Besides Klabo, Brice Berggren (So., Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) was the only other Concordia player with more than one hit. Berggren finished the game by going 2-for-2 and scoring three runs. Jesse Barnacle (Sr., Deer River, Minn.) collected only one hit but added three crucial RBI's.
The Cobbers will finish off the MIAC regular
season by playing four series all at home. They will start their eight-game
homestand by hosting Macalester on Saturday, April 24 at 1:00pm. Concordia
will then take the week off for final exams before getting back into action
against league-leading St. Olaf on Saturday, May 1 at 1:00pm.
