The two wins gives the Tommies their second straight MIAC regular-season title and third in the past four years. Concordia finishes second in the MIAC with a 14-6 conference record. The Cobbers fall to 22-13 overall and will play Gustavus in the first game of the MIAC postseason tournament on Friday, May 14 at 3:30pm in Northfield. Concordia will be making their second consecutive trip to the conference tournament and third in the past four years.
St. Thomas was able to "nickel and dime" Cobber starting pitcher Jeremy Hinderks (Sr., Renville, Minn./R-C-W HS) in the first few innings of game one. Hinderks pitched out of a jam in the second inning, but was then nicked for a single run in the third when Josh Howard doubled to center field, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a ground ball to second. The Tommies tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, as they produced six hits in the two frames - five of which were singles. The breakout inning for the Tommies was the sixth inning when they scored four unearned runs. The big shot for St. Thomas was a three-run homer by Casey Garven.
Concordia was finally able to get to Tommie starter Sean Lindstrom in the bottom of the sixth inning. Lindstrom had limited the Cobbers to only three hits over the first five innings. That changed in the sixth when Jack Dwyer (Sr., Bismarck, N.D./Shiloh Christian HS) led off with a single and then Ryan Hebrink (Sr., Sacred Heart, Minn./R-C-W HS) launched a shot over left field fence. For Hebrink it was his 11th home run of the season and 30th in his career. Both totals are school records.
The only drama left n the game was in the top of the seventh when Hinderks was pulled in favor of Matt Kemp (Sr., Hamilton, N.D./Cavalier HS). That broke Hinderks' streak of 10 straight complete games. Kemp came on and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
Ryan Hebrink and Jim Johnson (Sr., Anoka, Minn.) led the Cobber offense in the opener. Both players had two hits in the game. Johnson went 2-for-3 and extended his hitting streak to five games.
In the second game, Concordia head coach Bucky Burgau was able to get some much-needed playing time for his non-starters. Bryan Romsa pitched the first two innings for the Cobbers and gave up one run on two hits. he was one of six different pitchers used by the Cobbers in the game. Zach Johnson (Fr., LeSueur, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson HS) and Tieg Herman (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) were the most successful Concordia hurlers in the game. Both players threw one inning and both did not allow a hit or a run. Johnson faced the top of the Tommie lineup in the third inning and set down the side in order.
The Tommies built on their 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Facing Concordia sidewinding pitcher Jake Hendricks (Sr., Fargo, N.D./Fargo South HS), St. Thomas scored four runs on four hits and sent eight men to the plate. The Cobbers broke up the Tommie shutout in the sixth inning. Concordia came up with three hits of their own and scored twice in the inning. St. Thomas reliever Brian Krause picked up his team-leading fourth save of the year by pitching the final 1.1 innings of the game.
Concordia was outhit 10-7 in the second game. Scott Johnson (Sr., LeSueur, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson HS) was the only Cobber starter to collect more than one hit in the game, as six different Cobbers collected hits. Johnson went 2-for-4. Brice Berggren (So., Dassel, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) and Ross Hebrink (So., Renville, Minn.R-C-W HS) provided the clutch hits for Concordia. Both players drove in single runs in the sixth inning.
The Cobbers will have six
days off before they start the four-team, double-elimination conference
tournament. The tournament will be held in Dundas and Northfield. Concordia
will play Gustavus at 3:30pm on Friday, May 14 in Northfield in the first
game of the playoffs. The Cobbers' second game will be at 7:00pm on Friday.
The location will be determined by the outcome of the first game. If Concordia
wins the first game, they will play at Dundas against the winner of the
St. Thomas/St. Olaf matchup. If the Cobbers lose, they will play in the
first elimination game in Northfield against the loser of the Tommie/Ole
game.
