Cobbers Open 2004 With Strong Victory Over St. Thomas.

(Moorhead, Minn.)-- Buoyed by the strength of six individual event winners and 16 season-best times, Concordia opened the 2004 calendar year by beating St. Thomas 133-97. The victory marks the first time in fours seasons that the Cobbers have beaten the Tommies in a head-to-head dual meet.

The Cobbers won both relay events and junior diver Emily Hall (Minot, N.Dak.,Minot HS) returned to the team, after spending the first semester studying in New Zealand, and dominated the competition in the 1-meter diving event. Hall was named the MIAC Diver of the Year at last year's conference championship meet.

Megan Johnson (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul HS) and Angela Renner (Fr., Mandan, N.Dak./Mandan HS) were the other individual event winners for Concordia. Johnson won the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly and Renner was victorious in the 50-yard freestyle. Johnson had season-best times in both events. She swam a 2:09.51 in the 200-yard freestyle and 1:05.83 in the 100-yard butterfly. Both times were two seconds faster than her best times of 2003.

Cobber sophomore Allison Lowe (Dent, Minn./Perham HS) finished second in the 200-yard freestyle in a career-best time of 2:12.96. That time was seven seconds faster than her previous season-best time this year. Kirsten Borchardt (Jr., Hutchinson, Kan./Hutchinson HS) recorded season-best times in both of her events. She finished second in both the 1000-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle. Her time of 11:57.14 in the 1000-yard freestyle was 11 seconds faster that her best time of the year, and her mark of 5:50.80 in the 500-yard freestyle was three seconds faster than her season-best time in 2003-04.

Concordia will continue their drive towards the MIAC championship meet when they take part in a dual meet at Hamline on Friday, January 23 at 6:00pm. The Cobbers will compete their St. Paul weekend by competing at the St. Kate's Invitational on Saturday, January 24 at 8:30am.

Coach Julie Lucier's Post-Meet Comments:
- Allison Lowe swam a career best in the 200 freestyle with a 2:12.96, good for a second place finish. This time is a second faster than her previous career best and 7 seconds faster than her best this season.

- The team had 16 season bests!

-  Kirsten Borchardt had season bests in both of her individual events. She dropped 11 seconds in the 1000 freestyle and 3 seconds in the 500 freestyle.

- Megan Johnson also had two season bests today. She dropped 2 seconds in her 100 butterfly and 2 seconds in her 200 freestyle.

- Jana Hemstad dropped 14 seconds in her 100 freestyle for a season best.

- This was Emily Hall's first meet back from studying abroad. She took first in both of the diving events and looks like she never took a break.

- We took first place in both the 400 Medley and the 200 Freestyle Relays.

- It has been four years since we've beat St. Thomas in a dual. The Tommies are a hard team to beat.
