November 27, 2004 vs. Occidental College - Noon
at the Fargodome - Fargo, N.D.
2nd Round NCAA Playoffs
FARGO, N.D.-- Concordia and Occidental scorched the Fargodome turf for over 750 yards in total offense and 82 points in their second round playoff game held in Fargo, N.D. Despite all that offense, the game hinged on a two-point conversion, as the Tigers stopped the Cobbers with under three minutes to go in the game and held on for the 42-40 upset win.
Occidental, the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) champions, won back-to-back Division III playoff games for the first time in school history. The Tigers have now won 10 straight game, are 10-1 on the season and will play the winner of the Linfield (Ore.)/UW-La Crosse game for the West Region Championship. Concordia narrowly misses the chance to win 12 games for the first time in school history, and ends the season at 11-1.
The game ended up being determined by offensive swings. After Concordia scored the first touchdown of the game on the opening drive, Occidental proceeded to rip off four straight scores to take a 28-7 lead just before halftime. The Cobbers then scored in the waning moments of the half and then twice more to start the third quarter to tie the game at 28-28. The Tigers countered with two strikes of their own before the Cobbers finished the game with the final two touchdowns.
The three biggest plays of the game turned out to be the final two extra points for Concordia. The Cobbers had a miscue on the snap on their second-to-last touchdown that would have put Concordia down by only seven. Instead, the Cobbers had to go for a two-point conversion on their final score and were denied the end zone when Concordia quarterback Brian Schumacher fumbled the ball as he tried to stretch for the goal line.
The bulk of the scoring was handled by the two premiere scoring backs in the game. Occidental's Ryan Gonzalez scored four touchdowns and finished the game with 52 rushing yards on 15 carries. Concordia's Ed Oehlers rushed for three touchdowns and rambled for a game-high 94 yards on 18 carries. The three rushing TD's brings his season total to 15 and ties a school record for rushing scores in a single season.
The Tigers accumulated 366 yards in total offense, much of it behind the throwing arm of quarterback Andy Collins. The freshman transfer from Oregon threw for 281 yards on the day. He was a solid 25-for-34 and finished with two touchdown passes. Caleb Small, had a career game for the Tiger receiving corps. The little-used receiver entered the game with 10 total catches on the season and ended up with a game-high 10 receptions for 124 yards.
Concordia had their best offensive output in three games, as they put up 400 yards in total offense. Besides Oehlers' three touchdowns, senior wide receiver Shawn Reile scored two touchdowns and had a season-high 131 receiving yards. Schumacher finished the game 10-for-20 for 160 yards. Wide receiver Andrew Passanante threw two passes, completed them both and finished the day with 79 passing yards.
Defensively, Concordia was led for the second straight game by Tanner Radermacher. Radermacher made seven solo tackles, a game-high 14 tackles and finished with the lone Cobber interception. Defensive end Adam Campbell finished his career with a three-sack performance, and linebacker Josh Dietz came up one tackle shy of tying the Cobber record for total tackles in a season. Dietz finished with 11 total tackles and ended the year with 125.
Occidental's Anthony Ostland
had two sacks and ups his season total to 13. Kyle Stowers led the
Tigers in tackles with five solo and eight total.
