Business-Like Cobbers
Sweep Lakeland (Wis.) to Open 2004 NCAA Tournament.
Box Score: Concordia
3, Lakeland 0
La Crosse, Wis.-- Last year
the Cobbers were content to be in the NCAA tournament and happy with anything
that came their way. This year the Cobbers have higher aspirations and
have a business-like attitude. Concordia calmly dispatched Lakeland (Wis.)
3-0 (30-18, 30-23, 30-23) in the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regional,
and advances to play UW-Stout on Friday, November 12 at 4:30pm in the regional
the semifinal.
The Cobbers, MIAC tournament
champions, quickly jumped on the Muskies, who were the regular-season and
tournament champions of the Lake Michigan Conference. Concordia bolted
to the early lead in game one, and except for a stumble at the beginning
of game two, never looked back.(More) |

For the second consecutive
season Concordia was sent out of their Central Region to play in the Midwest
Regional Tournament in the first round of matches in the NCAA Tournament.
Concordia will play Lakeland College (Wis.) on Thursday, November 11 at
4:30pm in the first round of the Midwest Regional at the UW-La Crosse.
The Cobbers are seeded third in the tournament. The winner of the Concordia/Lakeland
match will play #2 UW-Stout (30-4) on Friday, November 12 at 4:30pm.
Lakeland College is 25-13
on the season and earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament by virtue of their
win in the championship match of the Lake Michigan Conference (LMC) tournament.
The Muskies also won the LMC regular season title. Lakeland is making their
third straight appearance to the NCAA tournament. Last year they also played
in the Midwest regional. The Muskies lost in the first round of the 2003
tournament to UW-Whitewater in a thrilling five-game match (31-29, 22-30,
25-30, 30-28, 14-16).
Concordia and Lakeland have
only one common opponent. Both the Cobbers and the Muskies played UC-Santa
Cruz and both teams beat Banana Slugs. Concordia won in three games (30-26,
30-22, 30-27 while Lakleand beat UC-Santa Cruz in four games (30-10, 31-29,
31-33, 30-23).
The other first round match
of the regional will feature #4 UW-La Crosse (28-6) against #5 St. Norbert
(Wis.) (31-8). The winner of that match will play #1 UW-Whitewater (34-5)
