Cobbers
vs. Knights Game Recap
Cobbers Pound Upset-Minded
Carleton 6-0.
MOORHEAD-- In their last
two matches, Carleton had upset MIAC powers St. Ben's and St. Thomas -
handing St. Ben's their first conference loss in the last 28 games. Consider
their upset streak officially over.
Concordia scored three goals
in each half, received goals from six different players, outshot the Knights
24-2 and came away with a convincing 6-0 victory.
With the win, Concordia sets
a school record for most consecutive wins to start the conference season.
The Cobbers are now 4-0-0 in MIAC play and 6-2-0 overall. Carleton loses
for the first time in the conference, falling to 2-1. They are now 3-4-0
overall.
Amy Ravenhorst (So.,
Hollandale, Minn./Albert Lea HS) started the scoring parade by notching
her first goal of the season at 16:04. The league's hottest player, Morgan
Bain (Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) added her 10th goal of the year
at 25:58 and the Cobbers were on their way to their most lopsided MIAC
victory since they beat St. Mary's 6-0 last year.
For Bain, it was her seventh
goal in the team's first four conference games. She now has 25 points overall
and 16 in the MIAC.
Suzy Grabko (So.,
Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) finished the scoring in the first half when
she bent in a free kick from just outside the box at 35:30.
The second half brought more
of the same - plenty of Cobber goals and a dominating midfield attack.
Kelly
Ping (Jr., Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman HS) scored the first goal of the
half when she took a pass from Bain, stepped around the goalkeeper and
then neatly tucked it into the net for her third goal of the year.
Concordia finished the scoring
in a span of 2:17. At 73:30 Miriam Lombardozzi (So., Billings, Mont./Billings
HS) collected her first goal of the year, and then Rachel Lewis
(Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville) followed with her fourth goal of 2004 at 75:47.
Ashley Liegakos (Fr.,
Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) was credited with two saves in the game,
both in the first half. She now has five shutouts in her first eight college
games. Carleton split the goalie duties between Emily Muirhead and
Jenna
Bernhardson. Muirhead made four saves in the first half and Bernhardson
stopped two shots in the final period.
The next game for the Cobbers
will be a showdown with the only other unbeaten team in the conference.
Concordia will play at Macalester on Wednesday, September 29 at 4:00pm.
The game can be heard live on the internet by going to the Macalester athletic
website at: www.macalester.edu/athletics/.
Concordia's next home game is Saturday, October 9 at 2:30pm against St.
Catherine. That game is part of the Concordia Homecoming festivities.
