Cobbers
vs. Blazers Game Recap
New Generation Cobbers
Beat St. Ben's to End 16-Game Losing Skid to Blazers.
ST. JOSEPH-- The old generation
of Concordia women's soccer lost 16 straight times to St. Ben's. The new
generation using a pared down playoff roster put the clamps on the Blazer
attack and came away with a 1-0 victory in St. Joseph.
The old generation of Cobbers
never finished higher than fifth place in the MIAC, never won more than
five conference games and 12 games overall. With the win over St. Ben's,
the new generation finishes second in the conference, ends the year with
a school record 10 wins in league play and a school record 13 overall wins.
Yes, Mr. Dylan, the times
they are a-changin'!
Concordia scored a goal in
the last 10 minutes of regulation to pull out a victory in their last regular
season games, and beat St. Ben's (5-4-1 MIAC/9-6-1) for the first time
in 17 tries. Ellyn Roach (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.) hammered a low
shot off the left post to finish off a nifty passing combination that started
with Kelly Ping (Jr., Bozeman, Mont.), went through Miriam Lombardozzi
(So., Billings, Mont.) and culminated with Roach sending the Cobbers into
the playoffs riding a two-game overall winning streak and having not lost
six MIAC games.
The Cobbers, who rested some
of their starting players to get ready for the conference playoffs, found
the right combination in the middle of the field to slow down St. Ben's
and limit the Blazer's chances throughout the game.
Concordia was aided by the
return of defender Carmelle Johnson (Sr., Northridge, Calif./Hamilton
HS) who returned to the lineup for the first time since breaking her arm
against St. Catherine on October 9. Johnson and the rest of the Concordia
defense limited St. Ben's from getting any quality chances inside the Cobber
penalty area.
Offensively, Concordia was
able to make the most of their limited chances as the blustery weather
curtailed both team's ability to possess the ball.
The Blazers held a statistical advantage in shots (12-5) and corner kicks
(8-1). Concordia goalie Ashley Liegakos (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.)
finished the game with four saves to pick up her 13th win of the season
and her ninth shutout. She finished the conference season with a 0.81 goals
against average. Blazer keeper Amanda Broadbent made three saves
in the losing effort.
Concordia (10-1-0 MIAC/13-5-0)
will host the first-ever playoff soccer game played at Jake Christiansen
Athletic Complex when they take on St. Olaf on Wednesday, November 3 at
2:00pm. The Oles clinched the final MIAC playoff spot by beating Carleton
3-0 on Saturday.
Tickets for the semifinal
match can be purchased at the gate on the day of the game. Ticket prices
are; $7.00 for adults and $3.00 for students. Regular season passes and
free student admission will not be honored for the MIAC conference tournament
matches.
The winner of the Concordia/St.
Olaf game will play the winner of the Macalester/Augsburg semifinal on
Saturday, November 6 for the MIAC tournament championship and the league's
automatic bid into the NCAA playoffs.
