Cobbers
vs. Scots Game Recap
Young Cobbers Fall in
MIAC Championship Game to Seasoned Macalester 2-0.
ST. PAUL-- The odds were
stacked against Concordia in the MIAC title game against Macalester. First,
the Cobbers were playing in their first-ever MIAC title game, the Scots
their second consecutives. Next, Concordia was fighting for a berth in
their first-ever NCAA tournament, while Macalester was hoping to make it
to the NCAA postseason party for the eighth time in the last ten years.
Finally, Concordia has a grand total of two seniors on the team and has
19 freshman or sophomores on the roster. The Scots have seven seniors on
the squad, and 10 of their 11 starters are either juniors or seniors.
The present of the MIAC scored
a goal in each half, and ran past the future of the league by two goals.
Macalester showed their experience in key stretches of play and methodically
came away with the 2-0 win.
The loss drops Concordia's
overall record to 13-6-1, while the Scots improve to 16-3-1 and will await
the announcement of the NCAA tournament selection committee to find out
where they will play in the first round of the NCAA women's soccer tourney.
The Cobbers did not show
their inexperience in the first 15 minutes of the game. Concordia controlled
the run of play at the onset and had two chances go a-begging in just after
the 10-minute mark. Morgan Bain's (So., Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake
HS) attempt was saved by Macalester goalie Louisa Bigelow and then
Amy
Ravenhorst (So., Hollandale, Minn./Albert Lea HS) hit a shot over the
crossbar 44 seconds later.
The Scots scored their first
goal against the run of play when Annie Borton scored her 16th goal
of the season at 18:37. From that point on, the Scots whittled away at
the youthful vigor of the Cobbers and clamped down on the Concordia high-powered
offense.
The back-breaking goal came
17 minutes into the second half when Cara Goff beat Ashley Liegakos
(Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) to make the score 2-0.
For the game, Liegakos made
four saves, as compared to Macalester's Louisa Bigelow, who stopped
two shots. The Scots outshot the Cobbers 13-4 in the game, and held a decisive
14-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Cobbers end the year
by breaking the school record in overall victories, MIAC victories and
highest league finish. Bain completes a storybook season that saw her break
the conference record for goals and points in a season.
