Cobbers Drop Marathon Doubleheader to Mayville State 8-3, 7-5. 
MOORHEAD-- On Monday afternoon and into the early evening Concordia and Mayville State hooked up in a doubleheader that was only made possible by the good folks that came up with the idea behind daylight savings time. When the last pitch had been thrown, the sun was below the tree line and the entire baseball diamond was engulfed by the ever-darkening shadows. 

The Cobbers and Comets battled for almost five hours on the diamond with Mayville State claiming two come-from-behind wins in the late innings. In the first game, the Comets used an eight-run, sixth inning to overcome a 2-0 deficit and win 8-3. In the nightcap, literally, the Comets whittled away at a 5-3 Cobber lead and crept into the night with a 7-5 victory.

The pair of losses extends Concordia's winless streak to four games. It also runs the string of games that the Cobbers have lost a game when leading after the third inning to three. Concordia is now 4-11 on the season, while Mayville State climbs their way over the .500 mark and is now 10-8.

Chris Klabo continues to be the main offensive weapon in the Cobber lineup. After being named the MIAC Fielder of the Week, Klabo went 2-for-6 and extended his hitting streak to 13 games. He has now hit safely in 14 of the team's first 15 games. Bryant Bergeson and Brian Schumacher also continued their steady offensive production on the year. Bergeson, the three-year role player, went 2-for-4 on the series and is now second on the team in hitting with a .433 average. Schumacher collected a pair of hits, scored a run and drove in another. 

In the first game, Blake Trenbeath pitched five scoreless innings for Concordia before giving up a pair of hits in the sixth. He left the game with Concordia holding a 2-0 lead, and unfortunately was not awarded the win for his yeoman-like performance. Matt McLeod, returning from an arm injury that sidelined him in all of 2004, relieved Trenbeath and gave up four straight hits and allowed eight runs to score. 

All told in the pivotal sixth inning, the Comets sent 13 players to the plate, collected nine hits and scored eight runs.

Concordia plated a run in the bottom of the seventh to make the final score 8-3.

In the second game, a saucer-like strike zone and multiple-hit innings caused the game to drag tirelessly into the twilight. After Mayville State scored twice in the first inning, Concordia countered with three of their own in the bottom half of the inning. The Cobbers were the recipients of five free passes and a Billy Denet two-RBI single that helped them erase a 2-0 deficit and turn it into a 3-2 lead. 

Concordia tacked on two more runs in the second inning, behind RBI singles from Klabo and Ryan Emter, and built the lead to 5-2. Cobber starting pitcher Zach Johnson ran into trouble in the third inning, allowing a pair of runs on three hits. His afternoon was finished when he gave up consecutive hits to start the fourth inning. Tieg Herman came on in relief of Johnson and pitched the final four innings and only allowed one run. 

Concordia will return to MIAC play when they host Hamline on Wednesday, April 6 at 2:30pm.
