Cobbers Make Like Lazarus in Game 1 and Samson in Game 2; Sweep Hamline 7-6, 11-1. 
MOORHEAD-- After five innings in the first game with their doubleheader with Hamline, Concordia had been left for dead. They were flailing away at the plate at any offering from Piper freshman Brian Martin. The Cobbers' usual confidence and team spirit had been deflated and it looked as if they would dig themselves an 0-3 hole in conference play for the second consecutive season. 

That all changed in the sixth inning when Concordia scored four runs to erase a 4-0 deficit. The four-run inning was like receiving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation for the Cobbers and gave rise to their unbelievable comeback one inning later. 

Hamline did their part in setting the stage for the walk-off heroics as they took a 6-4 lead in the top of the seventh inning when Andy Gagnon belted a two-run home run. 

The Cobber hopes of winning seemed completely dead and buried when, after Aaron Eckhoff led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, Matt Youngquist hit into a 4-6-3 double play. Sealed away in their tomb, Concordia pulled off their best Lazarus impersonation as they miraculously arose from the dead by scoring three runs on a single hit. 

The comeback started with a pair of walks to Billy Denet and Chris Klabo and then Brian Schumacher reached base on an error. That set the stage for the final blow as Ryan Emter chopped a ball down the thirdbase line. The Hamline thirdbaseman was going to be unable to get Emter at first but then committed the final error of the game as he let the ball roll into the outfield. The miscue allowed all three baserunners to score and the Cobbers to claim an improbable 7-6 victory. 

For the game, the Cobbers were outhit 10-7 with both teams struggling to field the ball cleanly in the wind-blown confines of Jake Christiansen Stadium. The Pipers finished the game with four errors, while the Cobbers made three miscues.

Bryan Romsa pitched the distance for Concordia as was rewarded with the unlikely win. He allowed four earned runs in seven innings and struck out two.

Concordia put the second game out of reach by the fourth inning. With momentum neatly donned in maroon and gold to start the nightcap, Concordia scored four times in the first inning, twice in the second and then four more in the fourth to bolt to a 10-0 lead at the midway point.

Schumacher struck the biggest blow of the second game. He hit a guided laser over the right-center field fence for a grand slam in the first inning and would finish the game with five RBI's as he went 2-for-3 at the plate. 

The final six innings was a coming out party for Cobber sophomore pitcher Kevin Engebretson. Engebretson masterfully mixed in his off-speed pitches to keep the Hamline hitters off balance and pick up his first collegiate complete-game victory. Engebretson did not allow an earned run, allowed only five hits and struck out six. Other than the lone run in the fourth, he did not allow a runner to reach third base, and finished the game by retiring seven of the final eight hitters.

Other than Schumacher's first-inning ICBM display, the Cobber offensive outburst was a team affair. Eight of the nine starting Concordia hitters collected at least one hit and four players had two hits in game two. Youngquist, Eckhoff and Bryant Bergeson were the other members of the Cobber multiple-hit quartet. 

Bergeson finished the day 2-for-3 and now leads the team in hitting with a .455 average and currently has an eight-game hitting streak. 

Concordia will put their two-game winning streak on the line when they play at Gustavus on Saturday, April 9 at 1:00pm. The Cobbers will return home to face Valley City State on Monday, April 11 at 2:30pm.
