Cobbers Get Dewildered by Dewitz in Doubleheader Loss Against Gustavus.
MOORHEAD-- Last weekend, Concordia was the victim of a 15-strikeout performance. On Saturday, with the wind whipping up to 30mph, the Cobbers were baffled for 11 innings by Gustavus starting pitcher Joyce Dewitz and struck out 20 times. Dewitz took advantage of the pitcher-friendly wind and only allowed two hits in a game that took until the 11th inning to finally come up with an outcome. The 11-inning marathon is the longest game for the Cobbers since they lost an 11-9 decision to the Gusties in 11 innings on May 2, 1998.

In the end, the Gusties came away with a 6-1 extra-inning victory in game one, and used that long distance win to come away with a sweep - winning the second game by an identical 6-1 margin.

The two losses drops Concordia out of a tie for fourth place in the MIAC and knocks their conference mark down to 3-5. The Cobbers are now 5-14 overall. Gustavus remains perfect in league play. The Gusties are now 6-0 in the MIAC and 12-10 overall.

While Dewitz bewildered the Concordia hitters with an excellent drop ball and a timely change-up, Cobber starting pitcher Lindy Sparby used her grit and determination to hold the Gusties scoreless for the first nine innings of the game.

In the first nine innings in the first game, the two teams combined for only four hits and at only twice did a runner reach third base. On both occasions, Gustavus was denied a chance to score as Sparby came up with clutch out after clutch out.

The game opened up in the 10th inning when the international rule of putting a runner on second base to start the inning was implemented. Gustavus scored once in the 10th inning, and Concordia countered when Krys Abrahamson went to right field for a single that scored Mandy Pearson.

The pivotal inning was the top of the 11th. The Gusties scored five times while only recording one hit. Five different errors cost the Cobbers as they allowed Gustavus runners to advance extra bases on the miscues.

For the game, Concordia committed eight errors. Although Sparby allowed six runs in the game, none of those were earned. Dewitz pitched 11 innings, fanned 20 and allowed only one earned run.

In the second game, Dewitz returned to the mound to pitch the first five innings and pick up her second win of the day. Although she did not put up the record-like numbers in the first game, she did keep Concordia at-bay by giving up only four hits and one earned run. Teammate Jenna Ruhl came on in relief and retired the final six batters to preserve the victory.

Gustavus scored single runs in the second and third innings and a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings on Cobber starter Gretta Stritesky to earn the sweep. Stritesky pitched the entire seven innings for Concordia despite injuring her pitching hand when she covered home plate on a passed ball-run scoring scenario.

Stritesky gave up 11 hits but only allowed three earned runs.

Lisa Kott led the Cobber offense with a pair of hits. Concordia's lone run came in the fifth inning when Tessa Manderfeld singles and then advanced to third on Sparby's double. Manderfeld then scored on a wild pitch.

Erin Ge was the catalyst for the Gustie offense in game two. She went 2-for-4 and drove in four of the Gustavus six runs, including the two big insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Concordia will hope to end their three-game losing skid when they play at St. Olaf on Tuesday, April 12 at 4:00pm. The Cobbers will return home on Thursday, April 14 at 4:00pm to face Augsburg.
