Meet Recap - Meet Results
Scrappy Cobbers Drop Conference
Opener to League Bully Gustavus 9-0.
With the loss, Concordia falls to 0-3 on the season. Gustavus, who also won two other matches on the day, improves their 2005 dual match record to 4-0.
Gustavus entered the match ranked seventh in the nation, and first in the Central Region, by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Concordia fought the Gusties all the way to the end as two of the singles matches went to the super-set tie-breaker and a third was settled by a pair of two-game victories.
In all three of the opening doubles matches, Concordia played Gustavus very tight. The highest competitive match came at #1 where Jake Thomas and Jordy Kamerling battled Adam Morgan and Brett Morse-Karzen to an 8-4 loss. Morgan and Morse-Karzen finished third at the ITA Small College Championshps, which were played at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida in the fall.
In singles play, Concordia claimed two sets and won 42 games. That is a decided improvement over last season when they did not win a single set and won only 21 games.
Kamerling led the Cobber charge at the vaunted Gustie tennis machine. Playing in the #2 singles position, Kamerling won the second set 6-3 before falling 10-4 in the super-set tie-breaker. Freshman William Wischer also forced his match into the tie-breaker. Wischer, the team's #4 singles player, lost the opening set 6-4 and then claimed the second set 6-4. He eventually lost 10-4 in the tie-breaker. Paul Tuchscherer was the next closest Cobber to claiming a victory. He fell 7-5, 6-4 in the #5 singles slot.
Concordia will have an extended
break before returning to play. The Cobbers will compete in Orlando, Florida
as part of their Southern spring break trip. Concordia's next match is
on March 12 at noon at Macalester.
