2004-05 Season Outlook: You’ll have to excuse Concordia head coach Jessica Rahman and the rest of the coaching staff if they feel like a college student in the mid 1990’s getting ready to watch the final episode of Beverly Hills 90210. Rahman is about to have the best seat in the house for the final episode of Mandy Pearson 56562. Mandy Pearson (Sr., Watkins, Minn.), last year’s MIAC MVP, is back for her senior season in 2004-05 and has already garnered preseason All-American honors by D3hoops.com. Last year Pearson finished the season by being ranked in the top 35 in the nation in three different statistical categories. She was eighth in assists per game (6.3), 29th in steals per game (3.5) and 32nd in free throw percentage (82.3%). She led the MIAC in assists (6.50 apg), was second in steals (3.73 spg) and 12th in overall scoring (13.7 ppg). She was also third in free throw percentage and fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.21). She has been gaining confidence and gathering accolades since she burst onto the scene as a freshman and was named to the MIAC All-First Year Team and led the nation in assists. The 2004-05 campaign should looks to be a coronation for one of the best players ever to suit up in a Cobber uniform. Pearson will not be the only star in this year’s season-long episode. Last year Concordia had their best record since the 1990-91 season. The team finished with a 21-7 mark and made it all the way to the MIAC playoff championship game, a first in school history. Concordia also set a school record for biggest improvement in one season. The Cobbers improved a full seven games from the 2002-03 season. Joining Pearson in the backcourt will be 2003-04 All-First Year Team member Annie Keeley (So., Grafton, N.D.). Keeley was second on the team in scoring last year with a 10.9 points per game average. She also finished the year as the team’s third leading rebounder (4.0 rpg), was ranked 14th in the league in 3-point baskets made and 15th in offensive rebounds (46). Keely also factored among the top players in the league in scoring, 3-point field goal percentage and assists. Her year of experience will help make the Cobber offense multi-dimensional and will help take some of the scoring load off Pearson and shooting guard Jamie Visness (Sr., Hallock, Minn.). Visness, like Pearson, is back for her final year as a Cobber. She was voted to the MIAC All-Conference Honorable Mention Team for the second consecutive year in 2003-04. Visness finished the year third on the team’s scoring list (10.0 ppg). She was among the league leaders in 3-point field goal percentage (33.7%) and 3-point field goals made (29). She scored in double figures in 11 of the team’s 28 games. The Cobbers will have to find credible replacements for two inside players if they want to have a repeat hit on their hands. Lost to graduation were center Beth Drager and rebounding force Debbie Slack. Drager was an MIAC All-Conference Honorable Mention Team honoree last year and led the league in blocked shots (3.30 blocks/game) and was 11th in the nation in that category. She was the team’s fourth leading scorer, averaging 7.6 points per game. Slack capper storied career by being named to the MIAC All-Defensive Team for the second straight season. She finished fourth in the MIAC in rebounding this season with a 9.2 rebounds per game average. Both players’ ability to grab crucial rebounds and keep the opposing teams’ inside players from scoring easy baskets will be sorely missed. The leading candidates to replace Slack and Drager are Tori Ehlert (Jr., Battle Lake, Minn.) and Amanda Levos (So., Casselton, N.D.). Under the guidance of assistant coach Bob Kohler, Ehlert developed into an inside force late in the season. She finished the year by averaging 4.4 points and 3.9 in only 15.4 minutes per game. Levos will have the bonus of added practice time this season. She was a member of the 2003 Concordia volleyball team that advanced to the NCAA tournament, which cut into the crucial preseason training time in her freshman season. This year she decided to forego volleyball in order to concentrate on basketball. The additional time spent in the gym will give her confidence a boost as she gets ready to play in her first full MIAC season. If the inside players can
band together and help out the starring members of the Cobber perimeter,
then Rahman could be looking at another award-winning season of Cobber
women’s basketball.
