Meet 6: Terry Haws Dual Tournament at St. John's - January 15, 9:00am Meet Recap - Meet Results
Cobbers Post 3-1 Record
at Terry Haws Dual Tournament at St. John's.
The Cobbers dropped their first match of the day but then rattled off three straight wins to finish the meet with a 3-1 record. That mark placed them second in the "B" bracket and it was tied for the third best record in the tournament. The top three Cobber wrestlers once again led by example. Dennis Kline (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.), Lee Rahrlien (Jr., Graceville, Minn.) and Smokey McBride (So., Eagan, Minn.) all posted 4-0 records. Kline had the most impressive slate for the Cobbers. The senior 197-pounder won all of his matches by a fall. Rahrlien, wrestling at 157, had one fall, a technical fall and a major decision in his four victories. McBride had two falls and won two matches by forfeit at the 125-pound weight class. Concordia opened the meet by getting edged by Concordia (Wis.) 27-19. The Falcons went on to win the bracket with a perfect 4-0 record. McBride, Rahrlien and Kline were the only individual match winners against the Falcons. The Cobbers then beat the University of Regina 41-6. Eight of the ten Concordia wrestlers in the match won their individual bout - four by fall. In the third match of the day, the Cobbers downed conference foe St. Olaf 52-0. Concordia bettered their four-fall match against Regina by winning five matches by fall against the Oles. It is the first time since the early 1980's that Concordia has shut out St. Olaf in a dual match. In the final match of the day, Concordia bettered nationally-ranked Rochester Community and Technical College 33-24. The Yellowjackets are ranked seventh in the latest NJCAA Division III rankings. The Cobbers claimed victories in six of the ten individual matches, with the big three of Kline, Rahrlien and McBride all pulling away with a win. Other top Cobbers on the day included Zach Schumack (Fr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), who went 2-0 in his only two matches of the day at 149. Student assistant coach Matt Lowers (Wadena, Minn.), wrestling at 165 posted a 3-1 record, as did Thane Taylor (Fr., St. Cloud, Minn.), who competed at 141. Concordia will compete in
three dual matches in the next seven days. The Cobbers will travel to Northern
State for a dual match on Wednesday, January 19 at 7:00pm. They will then
host a dual doubleheader on Saturday, January 22. The Cobbers will wrestle
MSU-Moorhead at 6:00pm in a match that was postponed from December 8. They
will follow that match up by wrestling against St. John's at 7:30pm.
