Plante Stays In Ballpark After First Day of MIAC Heptathlon. 
NORTHFIELD-- After the first day of the MIAC heptathlon, Concordia senior sensation Nicole Plante is in the ballpark to capture her first-ever MIAC multi-even crown. It might be a long way to the playing field for Plante, but she is close enough to Day 1 leader Ashley Dingels that a day-two surge could bring Plante the much-coveted title as the league's best overall athlete.

Plante is in third place after the first four events of the competition. She has 2,602 points and is 327 behind Dingels, who uncorked two MIAC heptathlon record-breaking performances in the first three events and finished with a total of 2,929 points.

Concordia's other multi-event participant, Amber Schackman is in eighth place after day one with 2,251 points.

History is in Plante's favor as she tries to make up the 300+ deficit in the final three events. Earlier this year in the St. John's heptathlon, Plante was 235 points behind Dingels after the first day. She then blew past the Cardinal track star in the final day to finish in second place in the event and beat Dingels by 146 points. Plante's second-day performance at St. John's helped her automatically qualify for the NCAA National Meet.

Plante led off the meet by running a 15.44 in the 100-meter hurdles, the second fastest time in the event. She then slipped up by only clearing 4-7.50 in the high jump. That mark was a full five inches below the height she cleared at SJU. Plante then tossed the shot put 34-0.75, and finished the day by running a 26.65 in the 200 meters. Her shot put distance was the third best in the competition.

Two of Plante's top three events are scheduled for the second day. The athletes will start out with the long jump before moving on to the javelin and then finishing off with the 800 meters. Plante has jumped a team-best 16-8 in the long jump and currently holds the top throw in the nation in the javelin at 144-5. If she comes close to either of those marks, she should be able to carry a lead into the final event of the competition, the 800 meters. She would then have to hold off Dingels, who has run a 2:27.22 in the event this year, as opposed to a season-best of 2:28.79 for Plante.

All three events on Friday will take place at Carleton College in Northfield and are scheduled to start at noon.
