11/16/98
The Games:
Air Force (5-2-1 ) hits the road for a two-game series against Concordia
College (2-1) in Moorhead, Minn. The Falcons and Cobbers meet at
6 p.m. MST each night.
Head Coach Frank Serratore:
Frank Serratore (Bemidji State, 1982) is in his second season as the
Falcons’ hockey coach. Serratore has a 20-21-1 record at Air Force.
In his sixth season as a college head coach, he has a 69-113-10 record.
Serratore came to the Academy from the Manitoba Moose of the International
Hockey League, where he was the director of hockey operations in 1996.
He was also the Moose head coach and general manager for two seasons and
led the team to a 52-56-16 record. Serratore was the head coach at Denver
from 1990-1994 posting a 49-91-9 record. Serratore spent seven seasons
in the United States Hockey League with three different teams and collected
a combined record of 247-103-6. He was named general manager of the year
twice and coach of the year once in the USHL. Serratore is assisted by
first-year assistants Capt. Joe Delich (USAFA, 1989) and Derek Schooley
(Western Michigan, 1994).
Best Starts:
Air Force’s 5-2-1 start is the best in 23 years and the fifth best
in school history. The other four teams to have better starts all had winning
records and two of the teams won 20 or more games. The following is a list
of the other four teams with their respective starts and final record:
1970-71 6-2 (15-11-2)
1971-72 8-0 (25-6)
1974-75 7-1 (24-5-1)
1975-76 6-2 (16-10)
Preseason Rankings:
For the first time in recent history, the Falcons claimed team and
individual recognition in the preseason. Air Force was ranked 20th in the
preseason The Sporting News national poll. Senior Justin Kieffer was also
listed on the All-American checklist. Of the 55 forwards on the list, only
15 are from schools west of the Mississippi river.
Scouting the Opponent:
Located in Moorhead, Minn., Concordia College is an NCAA Division III
member of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Cobbers
are coached by Steve Baumgartner who is in his 13th season at Concordia.
The coach entered the season with a 127-163-17 record. Last season, the
Cobbers were 10-14-1 overall and finished sixth in the conference. The
Cobbers are 1-1 this season after splitting two games with St. Thomas last
weekend. Prior to the games against the Falcons, Condordia plays
Minnesota-Crookston on Tuesday, Nov. 17. The games against Air Force will
be the home openers for CC.
Series Records:
Air Force has won all nine meetings against Concordia College. This
weekend’s games will be the first played in Moorhead, Minn. The teams have
not played since the 1986-87 season when the Falcons swept the series by
scores of 6-5 and 6-4. Six of the nine games in the series have been decided
by two goals or less while two have gone into overtime.
Road Wins Needed:
Air Force has been a different team on the road the past several years.
The Falcons have collected just two road wins in the past three years.
Those wins could not have been bigger as they came in the form of the sweep
over Army last season. Those wins also snapped a 35-game road winless streak.
Only three Falcon teams in the past 18 years have won more than two road
games in a season. Air Force is 0-2 on the road this season after being
swept at Bemidji State on Nov. 6-7.
Injury Report:
DOUBTFUL: Ryan Thompson (sprained right ankle).
Nearly Perfect:
Air Force opened the season at 3-0-1 to become just the fourth team
in school history to be undefeated after the first four games of the season.
The 1970-71, 1971-72 and 1975-76 teams all opened up 4-0 and finished with
winning records.
Tough at Home:
Air Force’s home unbeaten streak was extended to six games with a pair
of wins last weekend against Bethel College. The streak matches last season’s
six-game home unbeaten streak. To find a longer home unbeaten streak, one
would have to go back to the 1993-94 season when the Falcons posted a seven-game
home winning streak.
Last Week:
Air Force claimed its second series sweep of the season against Bethel
College. The Falcons won 9-2 on Friday and 5-0 on Saturday.
On Friday:
Eight different Falcons scored goals on Friday as Air Force scored
its most goals in nearly two years. Air Force rolled to a 3-0 lead in the
first period as junior winger Nels Grafstrom scored a pair of goals and
freshman Brian Gornick scored his second goal of the season. After a Bethel
goal in the second period, Falcon freshman Ryan Smith scored his first
career goal to give the Falcons a 4-1 lead. Brendan Connelly gave the Falcons
a 5-1 lead with 53 seconds left in the second period. Air Force added four
goals in the final period, three of which were season-firsts. Senior Dan
Davies, freshman Derek Olson and sophomore forward Billy O’Reilly
all collected their first goals of the season for an 8-1 Falcon advantage.
After a Bethel goal, junior Matt Zitzlsperger notched his second goal of
the season to make up the final margin.
On Saturday:
Air Force used a relentless offensive attack and the goaltending of
sophomore Marc Kielkucki to earn its first shutout since the 8-0
win over Connecticut last season. The Falcons posted a season-high 49 shots
on goal while holding Bethel to just eight. The eight shots on goal allowed
are just two off the school record set by Villanova two years ago. Grafstrom
continued his assault on the Royals on Saturday. After scoring two goals
on Friday, Grafstrom, who leads the team with six goals, scored two in
the first period on Saturday. His first came from Neil Barner at 9:24.
His second of the period was a power play goal at 12:30 from Tony Lawrence
and Jace Anders. Senior defenseman Mike McGuire gave the Falcons a 3-0
lead at the 17:02 mark of the opening period. His first goal of the season
was assisted by Justin Kieffer. Freshman Tony Lawrence notched the first
of his two goals on the evening early in the second period. His first goal
came from McGuire and Kieffer at 1:41. Lawrence’s second goal, from Kieffer
and Scott Bradley, gave the Falcons a 5-0 lead early in the final
period. Kieffer, who leads the team with 14 points in eight games, notched
a season-best three assists in the game. Kielkucki earned his first career
shutout. The sophomore from Brooklyn Park, Minn., made eight saves in the
game as he lowered his season goals-against average to a miniscule 1.79.
Series Notes:
In the series, the Falcons out-scored Bethel, 14-1, the most goals
the Falcons have scored in a series since the team netted 16 against St.
John’s last season. The Falcons also out-shot the Royals, 80-27, in the
two games.
Special Teams are Special:
The Falcons’ special teams units, which were among the nation’s best
last season, are on a record-setting pace again. This season, the Falcons
have scored on 22.5 percent of their power plays (9-40). The team’s penalty-killing
units, which had struggled a couple weeks ago, are improving. On
the season, the Falcons have killed 84.3 percent of the opponents power
plays (43-51). Last season, the Falcons killed 84.8 percent of the
opponents’ power plays to rank 11th in the nation. Air Force scored on
22 percent of their own power plays to rank 11th in the nation in
power play percentage. The Falcons’ penalty-kill percentage was the
best in school history while the power play percentage was the third best.
Between the Pipes:
Sophomore Marc Kielkucki is emerging as the starting goalie, but has
split time with fellow sophomore Sean Broderick. Kielkucki started both
games last weekend and played all but one period. In five periods, he allowed
just one goal and made 24 saves. Broderick played one period and made save
while allowing a goal. For the season, Kielkucki has played 335 minutes
and has a miniscule 1.79 goals against average with a .901 saves percentage.
Broderick has played 153 minutes and has a 3.91 goals against average.
Tossing the Bagel:
Kielkucki notched his first career shutout and the first shutout since
last season in the 5-0 win over Bethel on Nov. 14. Kielkucki faced just
eight shots on goal, but was forced to make several difficult saves.
First-line dominance:
The Falcons’ first line has been phenomenal this season. The
combination of LW Tony Lawrence, RW Scott Bradley and C Justin Kieffer
has combined for more than one-third of the team’s points. The first line
has scored 34 of the team’s 93 points and 13 of the 37 goals.
How about the Rooks?:
With 11 freshmen on the roster, the Falcons are one of the nation’s
youngest teams. Eight of the freshmen have played this season. The
class has combined for 37 percent of the team’s points. The class has 34
points on 14 goals and 20 assists. Tony Lawrence leads all freshmen with
10 points on five goals and five assists. Brendan Connelly has eight points
while Brian Gornick has seven. Against Bethel College, the freshmen combined
for 14 of the team’s 34 points.
Tough in the Middle:
Air Force has dominated the second period this season. The Falcons
have outscored the opponent, 13-4, in the middle period. When the
Falcons have led after the second period they are 5-0. When trailing after
the second period, the team is 0-2. The Falcons are 0-0-1 when they are
tied entering the third period.
Scoring from Elsewhere:
The best news for the Falcons last weekend was that team received scoring
from the second, third and fourth lines. The Falcons second line scored
eight points last weekend, the third and fourth lines each scored two goals.
The defensemen also got into the act by collecting three goals and four
assists.
