MIAC softball champion St. Mary's notches five  NFCA Midwest All-Region

MINNEAPOLIS - Three-time Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball champion St. Mary's University claimed three first-team athletes and a total of five selections to lead MIAC schools in the 1999 National Fastpitch Coaches Association's Midwest All-Region team, named Thursday.

St. Mary's, which carries a 36-5 record and No. 9 national rating into this week's NCAA Division III Midwest Regional at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, was paced two sophomores who earned first-team recognition for the second year in a row - utility player Jill Hocking and outfielder Jennifer Meyer. Hocking carries a 17-3 pitching record and a .353 batting average into this weekend's play, while Meyer leads Cardinal regulars with a .431 batting average and 17 extra-base hits. Senior second-baseman Jill Berthiaume was also named to the first team. Junior pitcher Teisha Smith, a first-teamer last year, earned second-team regional honors this year, and junior outfielder Angie Wright was named to the third team.

St. Thomas, which finished second in the MIAC and earned an NCAA Division III tournament berth for the third straight year, had two first-team selections and three selections overall. Named to the first team was sophomore pitcher Casey Curson and sophomore shortstop Sarah Grudnowski, and named to the third team for the second year in a row was senior outfielder Jessica Boumeester.

Third-place MIAC finisher St. Benedict earned three first-team selections - freshman third-baseman Patty McCabe, junior outfielder Mary Welle and junior at-large player Angie Erickson. Welle was named to the regional team for the second straight year.

Augsburg also had three regional selections - junior outfielder Emily Miller (second team), freshman utility player Rachael Ekholm (second team) and senior second baseman Jodie West (third team). West earned third-team regional honors for the third year in a row.

Concordia-Moorhead had two players selected to the regional team - senior catcher Heidi Mueller (second team) and freshman pitcher Erin Gunderson (third team).

Gustavus Adolphus' junior first baseman Meghan Krause was named to the regional first team, and St. Olaf senior shortstop Erin Collins was named to the third team.

Among other Minnesota Division III colleges, Martin Luther College designated player Jenny Nommensen, a freshman, was named to the second team.

The NFCA Midwest All-Region team is named by a committee of Midwest college softball coaches, chaired by Augsburg College coach Carol Enke.
