Jeff, the son of Cobber assistant coach Dale Hertel, entered the 1998 football season as Concordia's No. 2 quarterback and was the heir apparent to senior starter Ethan Pole. But earlier this week doctors discovered Jeff has a hereditary circulatory problem that was causing impaired vision. He is scheduled for surgery on August 25. His condition was discovered before any contact drills in fall practice. Jeff is an outstanding all-around athlete. He finished 5th
in the Decathlon at the 1998 MIAC Outdoor
Track and Field Championships and also scored in four other events.
Hertel placed 4th in the Javelin, 7th in the long jump, 7th in the
triple jump, and 8th in the high jump.
