Looking Back -- the Early Years

After researching the early history of athletics at Concordia, once can sense the encouragement that the college gave to participation in the various sports. At the same time the administration wanted some general supervision of athletics; hence the formation of the College Athletic Association in 1904. The athletic association required certain hours for participation and those who participated had to maintain a certain class average.

The facilities were somewhat marginal in the early years. The gymnasium located in the basement of Old Main served the basketball program and also gymnastics classes. There was adequate room for outdoor activities. The new gym, constructed in 1915, was a tremendous boon to the sports program as well as for other college activities.

Basketball and baseball were the two major sports. Sporadic attempts to introduce track, soccer and tennis were made at different times. Football seemed to draw much enthusiasm. Instruction in football was started as early as 1909, but it wasn't until 1916 that a schedule of games with other schools was developed.

Articles in the early college publications called for support of the student body. These articles encouraged the students to come to the game and yell for their team.

Inter-class competition especially in basketball was very competitive and held the interest of the students.

In 1920 a new plan was adopted to control student activities. It consisted of several board members, including literary, athletic, music, religion and social. The athletic board had general supervision over all athletic funds, scheduling, equipment and enforcement of eligibility rules.

Perhaps one of the outstanding events that took place during this period was the formation of the Interstate School Conference. Before this time no standards were established for such things as eligibility and scheduling of contests. This conference gave some structure to the athletic program.
