Chapter 4 -- The Depression Years

Frank I. Cleve, Football, Basketball and Baseball Coach 1926-1936

This was Coach Cleve's last football team at Concordia. Winning only one game, the team did suffer some bad breaks and injuries. Overall the team record was 1 - 6 - 1 and in the MIAC 0 - 3 - 1.

Returning lettermen were Captain Olaf Midgarden, Al Dyke, Henry Held, Eddie Romuld, Magne Syvrud, Art Myrom, John Butorac, Mike Chupich, Pete Syvrud and Tug Rostedt.

A typical starting lineup for the Cobbers that year was:

The Cobbers completed 17 of 20 passes in the MSTC game, losing 20 - 0.
The Winnipeg Rugby team, Concordia's first opponent, was coached by Bob Fritz, former Cobber who had graduated the previous year.

Augsburg College announced that they would drop football this year because of lack of numbers
and financial reasons.

The spring football game ended in a 0 - 0 tie.

Rev. Carl Ylvisaker was named tennis coach. For the past few years a student coach had been in charge of the tennis team.

Coach Cleve's basketball team had an 8 - 10 overall record, 5 - 6 in the MIAC. On the roster were Croonquist, Dyke, Schneider, Romuld, Ernst, Chupich, Butorac, Kaushagen and Bolten.

Prof. Ed Fuglestad was named golf coach and meets were arranged with NDAC and MSTC. Several men signed up for golf and an all-college tournament was planned for late spring.

The senior class of 1935 pledged ten dollars each for the building of a track around the athletic field. The plans also included landscaping and the construction of a softball field.

Coach Cleve announced that an inter-class track meet would be held to determine representatives in the MIAC meet. The results of the meet were reported in the Concordian:

Five trackmen competed in the MIAC meet -- Duane Fiskum, Larry Schneider, Norman Erickson, George Arrington and Arnold Tjomsland.

Moorhead State and Wahpeton Science each scored 58 points and Concordia 19 in the MSTC Invitational track meet.

Forty-six players signed up for the tennis team to compete in the all-college tournament. Out of
the group, eight players were chosen to represent Concordia in matches with other schools.

Baseball was resumed after a four-year layoff as the Cobbers defeated MSTC 21 - 7.

Tom Scott has been hired as physical education director and basketball coach. Frank Cleve resigned to accept a position at Minneapolis South High School. Coach Tom Scott graduated from Kansas State Teachers where he played basketball for four years. After college he played with the Wichita Henry's, an AAU team that won the title that year. He coached at Kansas high schools for the past five years before coming to Moorhead High School as Director of Physical Education.(18)
