Chapter 5 -- The War Years

Coach Jake Christiansen and assistant coaches Bob Fritz and Cliff Rothrock led the 1948 football team to a 3 - 4 - 1 finish, eighth place in the MIAC with a 0 - 4 - 1 record. Team captains were Marvin Thompson and Charles Melberg.

The starting lineup had Willis Swanson and Alden Hvidston at ends, Harold Bale and Charles Melberg at tackles, Herman Meier and Earl Lee at guards, Bob Bain at center, Sonny Gulsvig at quarterback, Dave Simonson at fullback and Charlie Basch, Marvin Thompson and Dick Stromme playing the two halfback positions.

Other players included Don Perkins, Herman Radig, George Farr, Roland Stenerson, Harvey Christianson, Luther Simonson, Ed Anderson, Bob Larson, Jack Hilleboe, Paul Johnson, Eugene Lee, Clark Ringham, Phil Seljevold and Bert Tveit.

Plans for the new auditorium-gymnasium were still top priority.

At a corporation meeting, delegates affirmed their intention of erection the auditorium-gymnasium as near in the future as possible. It is hoped that the construction will get underway sometime in the middle of 1949 but the actual date will depend on the reaction to the "United Church Education Appeal" fund drive.(12)

The boxing team had a turnout of 32 men. Coaching the team was Wally Moll, a former Golden Gloves champion and a sophomore at Concordia. The team hoped to appear in exhibition at basketball games and also compete against a group of Golden Glovers from Wahpeton, North Dakota. The team did compete against MSTC and won two out of seven matches.(13)

In 1948 the basketball team had an 8 - 13 overall record and placed ninth in the MIAC with a 3 - 9 record. Coached by Jake Christiansen, the squad members were Captain Elwood Bohn, Robert Strand, Paul Fedje, Charlie Basch, Arvid Skogerboe, Sonny Gulsvig, Harold Covlin, Duane Albert, Carl Zander, Bob Peterson, Luther Hegland, Marvin Thompson and Armin Ross.

Player-coach Bob Bain led the Cobber hockey team to a fine season. Members of the squad were Alden Hvidston, Chuck Feste, Willis Swanson, Al Billingham, Mitchell, Hopkins, Oie and Sigurgeirson. The season results were:

The roster of the 1949 baseball team consisted of Coach Charlie Basch, Assistant Coach Gene Sather, Nelson, Eidsmoe, Stromme, Gulsvig, Johnson, Fedje, Garnaas, Hepper, Swanson, Bohn, Gabrielson, Bain, Halbakken, Narum, Reed and Olson. They ended with a 4 - 6 record.

This was the first year of the Steve Gorman League. The league was named after Steve Gorman, a Fargo business man, baseball enthusiast and owner of the Fargo-Moorhead Twins of the Northern League.

The 1949 tennis team with student-coach Don Pederson had one of the most successful seasons. The team entered the MIAC meet with a record of five wins and no losses. The team advanced to the second round of the MIAC tournament before being eliminiated. Season results were:

Irv Christenson's 1949 track team had 11 major letter winners on the roster -- Ivan Camrud, John Helm, Joel Lunde, Harold Woldseth, Carl Lee, Jim Anderson, Gordon Hanson, Bob Johnson, Ernie Teie, Alden Strandemo and Ted Stensland.

At the MSTC Invitational the following results were reported:

Wahpeton Science 13

The individual winners in the meet were:

Alden Strandemo Discus 120' 6 1/4"

Two dual meets were held with Mayville State with Mayville winning both meets 67 - 63 and 71 - 60.

Professor Holvik coached the golf team to a successful season. Members of the team were Howard Casmey, Arland Elton, Al Billingham, Noble Kile and Russell Rahn.

Concordia 10 1/2 UND 4 1/2

The Cobbers failed to place in the MIAC meet.
