Cobbers beat Carleton in MIAC Playoffs

Cobbers will play Gustavus for MIAC Playoff Championship after their 83-71 win over Carleton Feb. 22.


The Concordia Cobbers have advanced to the MIAC Championship game with their 83-71 win Feb. 22 over Carleton in the first round of the MIAC post season playoffs. Concordia will play at Gustavus Saturday at 1:30 to decide the MIAC Playoff title. Gustavus captured the MIAC regular season title. The Cobbers, 20-5 on the year, finished second in the MIAC regular season with a 16-4 record.

The Cobbers held a 36-26 lead at half-time Wednesday night , but Carleton whittled Concordia's lead down to 50-48 midway through the second half. Following a time-out, Concordia, led by Jesse William's, scored 10 of the next 11 points in the game putting the game out of reach for the Knights. William's scored five straight points igniting the run.

Daimen Crump led the Cobbers with 19 points on 7 of 12 shooting from the field. Kevin Pearson made 7 of 11 shots from the field to score 18 points in the game.

Concordia, who reached 20 wins for just the second time in school history, will make their first trip to the MIAC playoff final since the MIAC went to a four-team tournament format beginning with the 1984-85 season.

They will play Gustavus, who beat St. Thomas 76-62 in other MIAC first round game. Scott Lauinger poured in 32 points for the Gusties in the win. Karnell James scored 24 for the Tommies in a losing effort.

The winner of Saturday's game receives an automatic berth into the 64-team NCAA Divsion III Tournament. The Cobbers were ranked 8th in the most recent NCAA Division III West Region Poll will be looking for a bid to their first NCAA tournament. Bids will be announced Sunday, Feb. 25, about 7:00 pm. Thetop 8 in the region make the 64 team field.
