         Gustavus Men's Basketball Overcomes Shooting
Woes to Defeat St. Olaf 60-54

         by Tim Kennedy, Gustavus SID
St. Peter, Minn. (Thursday, February 26) -- The Gustavus men's basketball team
overcame first-half shooting woes and used a late Luke Schmidt layup with :14
remaining to defeat St. Olaf in the opening round of the 1998 MIAC Playoffs. The
60-54 win boosts Gustavus' record to 22-3 while the Oles end their season with a
         15-10 mark.

The Oles jumped out to an early 10-5 lead 4:21 into the game on a Justin Herzog
layup. The Gusties battled back and tied the game at 13-13 with 8:54 remaining in
the first half on a Schmidt layup. The game remained deadlocked until the Gusties
used a late 4-0 run at the end the half to go into the locker room with a 26-22 lead.

Gustavus opened the second half strong,, holding off numerous Ole comebacks.
The Gusties started to pull away when they went on a 10-0 run with 12:55
remaining. Junior guard Mike Kauls led the Gustavus surge by draining two long
three-pointers. The Oles refused to quit as they cut the lead to two points at 56-54
with only :23 remaining in the contest on a Robert Schweim three-pointer. St. Olaf
fouled senior point guard Aaron Grove on the inbounds pass and sent him to the
free throw line with :14 seconds remaining. Grove missed the front end of the
one-and-one, but Luke Schmidt grabbed the offensive rebound and laid the ball in
to stretch the Gustie lead to four at 58-54. Bob Southworth closed out the scoring
by hitting two free throws with :02 seconds remaining.

Leading all scorers was junior post Luke Schmidt as he tallied 18 points and
grabbed nine rebounds in the Gusties winning effort. Mark McDonnell scored 13
points while Mike Kauls added 11 for Gustavus. Robert Schweim led the Oles
with 15 points and ten rebounds. Justin Herzog added 10 points in the Oles losing
effort. The Gusties overcame 36% first-half shooting to finish with 43% shooting
from the floor, while holding the Oles to 36% shooting from the field.

As a result of St. Thomas defeating Augsburg 77-76 in Minneapolis in the other
MIAC Playoff semifinal, Gustavus the #2 seed will host St. Thomas the #4 seed in
St. Peter on Saturday night at 7:30 pm. The Gusties and Tommies will be facing
each other in the MIAC Championship game for the first time since 1992 when
Gustavus beat St. Thomas 62-49 in St. Peter.

MIAC Tournament Championship

(St. Peter,Minn. -- Saturday, Feb. 28) --
by Tim Kennedy, Gustavus SID

The Gustavus men's basketball team earned its third consecutive trip to the NCAA National Tournament with a 66-62 win over St. Thomas in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference Playoff Championship game played in St. Peter.  Junior guard Mark McDonnell hit two free throws with :15 seconds left to give the Gusties a 65-62 lead.  A three-point attempt by St. Thomas junior guard Matt Arnold with :05 seconds remaining did not fall and Gustavus closed out the scoring when senior guard Aaron Grove hit one-of-two free throws with :01 second remaining.  Gustavus improves to 23-3 on the year, while St. Thomas finishes its season at 18-8.

The two teams battled back-and-forth through the first 12 minutes of the game until a quick 9-4 spurt by the Gusties gave them a 30-23 lead with 4:01 remaining in the half.  A jumper by junior guard Bob Southworth with :02 seconds remaining gave Gustavus a 38-32 lead at the intermission.  Both teams shot extremely well in the first 20 minutes with the Gusties making
60% of their shots (15-25) and the Tommies converting 52% of their attempts (13-25).  Top scorers in the first half included Bob Southworth with 14 for Gustavus and Tom Fritz with 11 for St. Thomas.

The second half saw the Tommies quickly cut the lead to one at 41-40 at the 15:32 mark.  The Gusties pushed the lead back to five through the midway point in the second half and increased their lead to eight at 59-51 with 7:12 remaining.  St. Thomas increased the intensity of its defense limiting the Gusties to only four points over the next seven minutes and cut the lead to one at 63-62 on a tip-in by Tom Fritz with :16 seconds left in the game.   Gustavus' Mark McDonnell was fouled on the in-bounds pass and hit the above mentioned free throws to allow the  Gusties to hold on for the victory.  The Tommies had an uncharacteristically rough night at
both the free throw line, where they were 18-of-28 (12-of-21 in the second half), and from beyond the arc, where they were 0-for-5.

Bob Southworth scored 20 points for Gustavus to lead all scorers. Other Gusties in double figures in cluded Luke Schmidt with 14 and Mark McDonnell with 12.  St. Thomas was led by Tom Fritz with 17 followed by Kip Sparby with 14.

Gustavus, which has now won five MIAC Playoff titles and compiled a record of 13-4 in the 14-year history of the MIAC Tournament, will find out on Sunday night at 7:00 pm who their first round opponent in the NCAA Tournament will be and where the game will be played.  The first round games are set to be played next Thursday, March 5.  The Gusties defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater, 82-67 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year before falling to eventual national runner-up Nebraska Wesleyan 61-59  in Lincoln, Nebraska in the second round.

Gustavus Men's Basketball Advances to Second Round of NCAA Division III
Championships with 78-70 Win Over Augsburg

St. Peter, Minn. (Thursday, March 5)  -- Devean George scored 45 points
for Augsburg but it was not enough as Gustavus nailed key free throws down
the stretch to close the game with a 6-1 run and claim a 78-70 win
Thursday night at Gus Young Court, advancing to the second round of the
NCAA Division III Championships at Nebraska Wesleyan Saturday evening at
7:30 p.m.  The victory lifts Gustavus' record to 24-3 while Augsburg
finishes its 1997-1998 season with a 22-4 record.
The game began with several different runs by both squads, as the
Gusties broke out to an early 11-2 lead 4:05 into the game.  Augsburg
immediately countered with a 15-6 run to tie the game at 17-17 with 10:32
left in the half.  With 3:52 remaining in the half, Gustavus went on a 6-0
run to extend their lead to seven at 37-30 with 1:57 remaining, but five
late Auggie points, including a 30-foot three-pointer by Devean George,
cut the Gustie lead to two, 37-35, at the intermission.
In the second half, the Gusties methodically built an 11-point
margin at 61-50 with 11:32 remaining in the game.  Augsburg then went on a
11-3 run to close the gap to three, 64-61, with only 6:00 minutes
remaining on two Kris Long free throws.  Gustavus held off the late Auggie
charge with key free-throws down the stretch from Bob Southworth, Aaron
Grove and Mark McDonnell.
Leading the Golden Gustie charge was Luke Schmidt, as he tallied
26 points on 10-of-22 shooting from the field while grabbing 12 rebounds.
Marc Newell scored 17 points on eight-of-10 shooting from the field, while
also grabbing 10 rebounds in 37 minutes of play.  Junior guard Mark
McDonnell added 13 points and five rebounds in the winning effort.

from the field while grabbing 11 rebounds.  George, the only Auggie to
score in double figures, was two points shy of the Augsburg single-game
record of 47 set in 1963 by Dan Anderson.

Gustavus Men's Basketball Team Defeats Nebraska Wesleyan, 65-51
To Advance To "Sweet Sixteen" of NCAA National Tournament
 Tim Kennedy, Gustavus SID

(Lincoln, Nebraska, Saturday, March 7, 1998) -- The Gustavus Adolphus
College men's basketball team defeated Nebraska Wesleyan, 65-51 in the
second round of the NCAA National Tournament in Lincoln, Nebraska.  The
Gusties will now face defending national champion Illinois Wesleyan in the
West - Midwest Sectional Finals next weekend at a site yet to be
determined.
Against Nebraska Wesleyan, the Gusties held a slim 45-44 lead with
5:25 remaining, but used a 20-6 run over the final five minutes of the game
to claim the 11-point victory.  The Gusties, who are the #3 seed in the
West Region, improve to 25-3, while Nebraska Wesleyan, the #2 seed,
finishes at 23-3.
Both teams struggled from the field in the game as the Gusties shot
44% (20-of-45) and the Plainsmen shot 40% (18-of-44).  Gustavus did convert
six-of-13 three-point attempts, while Nebraska Wesleyan managed to make
only two-of-17 treys.  Luke Schmidt led the Gusties with 15 points followed
by Mark McDonnell with 14 and Bob Southworth with 13.  Eleven of
Southworth's 13 points were scored in the second half.  Mark McDonnell was
eight-of-eight from the free throw line, including six-of-six in the final
three minutes of the game.  Nate Thomas led Nebraska Wesleyan with 17
points.  Gustavus avenged a 61-59 loss to the Plainsmen in the second round
of the national tournament last year in Lincoln.
Gustavus has now advanced to the "Sweet Sixteen" of the NCAA Division
III Tournament three times in the past six years (1992, 1995, and 1998).
The last appearance was in 1995 when they were defeated by Wittenberg
University in Springfield, Ohio, 76-68.  The NCAA Tournament Committee will
now choose either UW-Platteville, who defeated UW-Oshkosh, 69-59, in the
other West Region second round game tonight, or Gustavus to host the
West-Midwest Sectional on Friday and Saturday, March 13-14.  The decision
is expected to be made on Sunday evening, March 8 at 7:00 pm.
UW-Platteville, which is 26-0 and seeded #1 in the West Region and ranked
#1 in Division III, is considered the favorite to host due to their being
the highest remaining seed in the West Region.
