Women‚s golf wins 8th straight; national hopes look promising

by Jon Birkeland

Tuning up for a chance to go to nationals, the Cobber Women‚s Golf Team continued where they left off last fall by winning the Mankato State Invitational this past weekend.

Seventeen teams competed in the two-day tournament in Waseca, Minn. After the first round the Cobbers found themselves in second place, four shots behind leader Briar Cliff.

Senior Kari Walrath paced the team with an 84. Junior Sarah Penfield and first-year student Kristen Hanson both fired 86s, while sophomore Jenny Dick shot 90. Senior Jennifer Harms contributed a 93.

The team has been without the current MIAC champion, sophomore Jill Carlin, as she is recovering from a knee injury suffered during the end of the Concordia women‚s basketball season.

The weather turned cold the second day, and the women‚s team toughened up and played solid enough to win by one shot over rival South Dakota State.

Again Walrath led her team, finishing second individually at 168. In fourth place at 172 was Penfield. Both Harms and Dick tied at 20th with 181s as Hanson slid into 28th place at 184.

The women will be given a big test this weekend at the NCAA Division II and III State Tournament held in Winona, Minn. Even though the chances are good they will be selected for nationals, nothing is guaranteed. „We just had our eighth consecutive victory and hope this momentum will carry through the weekend,š Harms said. „We‚re hopeful that we will be selected as one of the top teams in Division II and III women‚s golf and get the opportunity to play at nationals.š

If selected, the Cobbers will travel to Michigan May 14-17 for the NCAA Division II and III National Tournament. The men‚s golf team will play their lone tourney of the spring this weekend in Waseca.
